Is this the only piece of medical equipment I need to buy for first year? If not, what else do I need to buy and how much does it run?

(trying to figure out how much to borrow for next year)

You should buy the a Littmann. They generally cost less than 200 bucks. But this website I found has them for a cheap $136! The ones with the two sided bell and diaphragm are generally preferred unless you are going into Cardiology, then you might consider the dorky one-sided stethescope. Good Luck!

From what I've heard, ADC is another good brand that costs a lot less than Littmann. Anyone else know anything about that? They also have a cardiology model that is the traditional two-sided bell/diaphragm type (might be a good option if your school prefers that you don't get the single-sided kind).

i bought a Littman cardiology III online for $124 shipped. I believe the website was allhearts.com This was over a year ago however.

Allhearts.com has them on sale for $120 right now, I think. Almost everyone on these boards recommends the Littman Cardio III, especially for students. If you're only going to do internal medicine and will never need the pediatric side, I guess the Master Cardio might be a better choice, though they also recommend the pediatric side of the Cardio III for especially thin patients. Then again, judging from the patients I saw shadowing an internist you'll probably never need that peds side.

That's all you need for next year. Get the Cardio III, you won't ever regret it.

Doesn't the Littmann Cardio master come with mods that allow it to be peds friendly? Also why couldn't one use it as a peds scope in its native config? I know the master has the bell and diaphragm function, which is dependent on the pressure applied instead of the side used. All and any thoughts would be much appreciated...

I can confirm that the Littmann Master Cardio comes with an soft plastic (same as the tube material) adapter that fits over the diaphragm to reduce the diameter for peds and other use. I haven't used it on a patient yet, however, so I can't vouch for how good it is compared to the standard bell.

I like my Littman Peds scope. It cost about $65 and is much less bulky. Then again, I'm a pediatrics resident.....

Schools have different requirements for what you need -- here we had to buy a bp cuff, reflex hammers, and an ophthalmoscope in addition to the stethoscope. I tried holding out for as long as possible.

but the littman cardio iii is definitely a good stethoscope ... everyone in my class has one.
