How much does not having a home program hurt an applicant?

There is a nearby community program that I can do rotations at and also get LOR from. Idea is to do an away as well. How much does this hurt me? Average applicant numbers wise.

Used to be that it shouldn't be a problem but I'm not sure anymore. I heard that there were not that many open spots for soap last year for whatever reason.

You need LORs. If you don’t have a home program, rotate away and make friends. No DOs have home programs and they match.
