Hey all. Im about to start my second year and I'm trying to decide when to take part 1 and want to have sufficient time to do the best I can. Is it feasible to study during the semester and take some time off after fall exams then hit it hard for the rest of the winter break and take the exam right before spring semester?

I appreciate your opinions!

Hi,
I personally think 5 weeks should do it. This is only when you have 5 weeks off from school and you absolutely don't have anything else to do other than studying for the board. Wouldn't you be too busy studying for your classes during the semester? I didn't start studying for the board until after my spring semester was over. Good luck.

5 weeks with nothing else is definitely plenty of time, but what kind of score are you shooting for? If you want 90+, I'd venture to say you'll need more time (at least I would). But, I guess if you're good at managing your time during the semester and can actually put aside a few hours a day to boards study you should be able to get a primo score. If you just want to pass, winter break would be enough. I just finished Part 1 a couple of weeks ago after 2 months of studying with a light summer class load. It was pretty busy, but not so bad. Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

I think that really depends on each person. I took the part I on March.. But it's been 7 years since I finished school, in Brazil... So I had to study a lot, things
I learned almost 10 years ago!!! I had to study for 4 months. But you are in school still and it is going to be a lot easier for you. I would recommend you to schedule your exam only when you start feeling comfortable, do not put pressure on yourself since you do not have a deadline. I had a deadline to apply to the international dental program... It felt aweful to count the days and think I needed a little more time to practice more biochemistry.
Anyways, after taking the exam I noticed it wasn't as hard as i imagined, however I would have done A LOT better if I had more time. AND PLEASE study the old exams.. I only used them for a few days before my exam and I noticed they were the most useful of all. A lot of the questions are the same or similar...

good luck to you. I am sure you are gonna do much better than you imagine!

I studied for 2 weeks, 10 hours a day everyday. Did First Aid once, and latest dental decks once, ended up with 85.

If I had to do it again, god forbid lol, I would do micro/path and biochem in the end. I would do first aid and decks twice. I did a TON of wikipedia-ing and read as much as I could about common diseases and anything that I didn't understand or wanted to understand better. I wasn't trying to get 90+ nor am I wanting to specialize. After the test I felt fairly confident that I had passed but as time went on, I started to stress and think about stuff I missed or didn't have any clue about. I'm just glad I passed...
