Just wondering what people are typically referring to when they talk about research experience for residency.

For example, I’m probably going to end up with one first author publication and one poster. Is this sufficient for something like University IM or is that just the bare minimum?

Obviously more is better, but as far as DOs go, any research is more than you're expected to have. If you look at the NRMP match stats, DOs always underperform in research. It also depends on the University IM program you want. My university's IM program may not require much research, but others could. You're on the right track with your research though. You want to emphasize publications, because one first author pub is worth 3 poster presentations, IMO.

Personally, I'm a DO aiming for an MD university IM residency, so I will want more research than my MD counterparts.

Look at the charting outcomes for the specialty you are interested in, as a DO you should probably be as close to (or decently above) those numbers as well as having good board scores. The actual numbers you want to hit will be dependent on the specialty.

Anyone know what the average number of research pubs those who matched ACGME anesthesiology have? I could do the research myself but I’m driving
