...now that May 15th has passed, what is the maximum amount of time one has to hold onto more than one acceptance before making a final decision?
Dana

Dana, didn't Duke give you some sort of time limit? I thought that schools typically give you a time frame within which you MUST decide when you get accepted off a waitlist after May 15th.

BTW, what schools are you deciding between?

Well, Duke said within 10 days of acceptance of their letter but I didn't know if there was some rule about holding 2 acceptances right now. I am pretty sure that I want to give up my other one, which is my state school (MCG)...I have just been putting it off because 1) I haven't received any financial aid packages yet and it would be interesting to see how much each school gives me and 2) I have just been holding it for so long and even had an apartment all picked out! My parents, well my father anyway, wants me to wait until I get financial aid feedback before making my decision but my mind is pretty much made up and I really want some of those SDNers on the "MCG again" thread to get my spot.

Contact BOTH schools immediately! You could easily be dropped from either (or both!!!) of them at any time.

Dana, how's it going? Any luck pressing financial aid info out of these schools?

Hey TommyGunn04,
Well, I am not pressing Duke yet because they are probably just receiving all of my information...it turns out that I accidentally put down the undergraduate code instead of the medical school code on the FAFSA, so I had to get that fixed. Then I had to fill out their NeedAccess application, which they should have received by now. Plus, I had to send both my parents' and my tax forms and W-2s, which they should have now. They told me that once they receive everything it takes them about a week to put together a financial aid package, which seems pretty quick, doesn't it?! So next week I will bug them. As for MCG, I will call them today just to make sure they are working on it!

Dana,

If you knew from other schools you applied, what your EFC (expected family contribution) is..then you can calculate Duke aid. If your state school used the need access form, then ask them if they had at least calculated your EFC by now. For instance, Pitt told me what my EFC, I called Duke, knowing that it would take a while to get my financial aid, and asked them how they calculate aid. They said they subtract the EFC from the cost of attending, and meet the remaining need with 60% grants and 40% loans (max unsub (8500) and the rest sub, i guess).

All in all, contact both schools. But from my experience Duke aid is usually better than state school aid. K? Hope to see in this fall.

Just as a helpful hint, it is max subsidized $8500, not unsub.
