I'm grumbling because I take my 3rd shelf (surgery) on Wednesday. But what I'm wondering is how much time other schools give for taking the shelf exam. We get 2 hrs, 10 minutes. However, I ask this question because of the 3 or 4 survey questions on the back of the scan-tron which includes "how much time were you given to complete this exam" with answers like 2 hrs 10 min, 3 hrs, and something else. Is this survey question rediculous or do other people really get more time?

P.S. I'm notorious for finishing exams early but I've used all the alotted time for the IM and peds shelf.

IIRC we got 2hr 10 min.

We get 2 hr. 10 min as well, but I too have wondered about that question. Maybe it's to check whether the proctors are administering the exam correctly.

As far as the surgery shelf goes, you MUST fly through it. I thought it was harder than IM, and I got stuck on a few questions and by the end I was just reading the first line of each question and looking at the answers and immediately marking the one that "felt" right. It's stressful. Remarkably, I did pretty well, though.

We get the shortest time, 2 hrs 10 mins. I know that the schools can choose how much time to administer the test. Our administratin purposefully chose the shortest time.

I thought Medicine was definitely more time-consuming that Surgery. The passages so long and detailed that by the time you get to the question you forget what the passage said. Even if you read the question first, it doesn't make it easier.

A guy once suggested to do the last ten questions first, you know, the ones that go from A-J or whatever. If you start from the beginning, there are seriously 5 minutes left at the end to do these, and you get flustered with all the choices. I just get em out of the way. Yeah, the surgery shelf is challenging, but appleton and lange is good preparation.
