How often do OBs perform D&Cs?

Just out of curiosity, how many D&C's do OBs generally perform in a given week or month? Not necessarily as an elective abortion but perhaps to remove an incomplete miscarriage or something along those lines? Is this a skill you need to keep up?

Depends on what kind of practice you have. D&C is a skill you learn as an intern, it's not a particularly difficult procedure. Most of them are done on post menopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Not sure but I would guess not many. It's not part of their training in FP as far as I know (may be at unopposed programs) and I think most FPs do not have OR privileges.

All right, thanks. I ask because a friend recently had one done for an incomplete miscarriage by her OB/FP physician and it struck me as kind of odd, but maybe the doctor had an OB fellowship. In any case, I don't think we even have a categorical OB in this town of 25,000+ people so the FP/OBs probably get regular surgical practice..

I probably do one or two every month, at least. Yes, it's most often for SABs, incomplete Abs, or abnormal bleeding.

It's one of our "bread-and-butter" skills. I'm not doing hysts every week, guys. It's a lot of D&C's, tubals, hysteroscopies, and tons of uterine ablations. That's what pays the rent now days in gyn. Minor stuff.

In a big inner city hospital in NYC I saw 6-7 elective D & C per week, but for non elective its random, definitely >10 though

While on call, we get at least one or two a week. And, if you are so inclined and D&C every missed ab, you could get one a night...depends on how you counsel your patients, certainly. In our program we get far more for missed or incomplete AB's and the occasional retained POC than we do for postmenopausal bleeding.

D&C, as mentioned, are simple, and common. Some moonlighting residents do something like 50 a month for extra cash.

As for the FP's, they can easily learn this procedure. In fact, many of the elective AB providers in this country are FP's, with specific training.

Thanks for the information! I'm a pre-med so I really wasn't sure how complicated or simple the procedure was. Makes sense now
