How often should I bug a LOR writer ?

I have a committee letter but Upstate and Penn Sate have asked for a graduate advisor to write something.

I actually found a nice person to write me something, even tho it's been a long time. He was very supportive and everything. But I am waiting since mid-September and still nothing. I politely reminded him of the rolling admissions, and he said he had forgotten about that and he would hurry it up.

Well, still nothing. So I once again sent a friendly email reminder and just asked if it had gone out ... How often should a person politely inquire? and at what point do you give up and try and find someone else? Nov 1 is almost here and I still have an incomplete application according to Upstate.

Anybody have any suggestions ? It's driving me nuts, especially since I think I am a good candidate for the school and really like it alot ... also, the guy is just super nice so that makes me feel like a pain in the butt when I try and follow up. So frustrating !

Well as nice as this guy is, as of now, he's keeping you from progressing through the application process. I would suggest, in hte meantime, that you get the required letter from someone else, with the hopes that this letter from this "nice guy" gets on its way. In the event that it doesn't, at least you'll have another one coming in. Timely applications are CRUCIAL.

And, if I remember correctly, it's time-and-a-half on the weekends; 4 x 1.5 = 6. Yup! That sounds about right.

I waited two weeks going on three and then thanked them for mailing out my letters. I had two LOR writers that were slow as molasses. So I sent them a personalized thank you card. It got the point across....the letters were mailed out in two days. They even notified me and said they were sorry. I couldn't believe it.

i dunno....at desperate times i sent a reminder every one or two weeks....
