How open are MD schools to having DOs rotate through?

I know some schools wont let DOs near their hospitals. Does any one know of any hospitals or university programs that are very anti-do?

I've rotated thru a million different hospitals. There are lots of "mostly DO" hospitals, but not many "MD only" hospitals Most big centers that are not DO hospitals have all different kinds of physicians working there, and you rarely know who is who.

And I have rotated thru with non-DO attendings at these hospitals, and to them, you are "the medical student". They don't really know or care what school or whether its allo or osteo. Some of them can get friendly and ask, but usually no matter what the answer is, you are treated like the typical "medical student" on their service.

There are a few programs that won't let 3rd or 4th year osteopathic students rotate through their hospitals. One big one that comes into mind is the University of Maryland affiliates. Another is NYMC Westchester hospital. They do let DO students rotate for PM&R, but nothing else.

The University of Colorado in Denver chareges $2,000 for out of state DO student and $1,000 for in state Do students to rotate there. When I looked in to it 2 years ago. The last I heard they were still doing this. But things may have changed.

Have DOs done residencies there?

As a 4th year DO student at COMP, I know of our students as well as DO students from other schools rotating through pretty much most of the hospitals affiliated with California schools including UC-Davis, UCSF, Stanford, UCSF-Fresno, UCLA, USC, UCI, Loma Linda, and UCSD. Some places may have stricter schedules in order to protect their own students' spots in certain rotations, but DO students have rotated through all these places before.

Yes, this is true. One of those million hospitals actually asked me who is sponsoring me or who told me to rotate there, so I gave them the name of the Chief of Neurosurgery. And he actually did tell me to come there.

That hospital was trying to keep their rotations mostly for students from schools that normally rotate through there. They have 3 schools in their area, two allo and one osteo. So, it wasn't a matter of not wanting DOs, it was a matter of getting the normal students in.

But, don't worry, you can pretty much rotate anywhere, with a few exceptions. If you know people or make some connections, it will be easier.

I want to agree with everyone above.

I'm in the middle of third year, and have seen a few places. Not as many as some, but a few.

All the MD's I've rotated with either fail to realize I'm not an allopathic student, or don't really care either way.

What I noticed at the one place that was purely allopathic that I rotated though was this: When your someone's student it's like being their child. What kind of parent they are is up for discussion, but they all see you as their responsibility for "care and feeding."

I've negotiated all my rotations so far except for the last 4 months of 4th year. I've not been denied based on my osteopathic education yet.

Thats weird because NYCOM grads have matched at NYMC for IM and gas in the past 3 years.
