so i'm trying to decide where to apply to. and although i know that there are a lot of schools historically or what not affiliated with religion, there are those schools in the MSAR that make me a bit nervous, ie. Saint Louis: "comfortable relationships with members of the human family and one's Creator." and Loma Linda, "Christian physicians...Christian principles..."

then there are the more toned down statements of "founded by the Jesuits" etc...

is this something to worry about? are there other schools that i should avoid if i don't want to study in an overly religious environment? how does religion factor into the medical education?

thanks!

Just like with any ideology, if you don't want the influence of Christianity in your education I would recommend appying eles where. There are plenty of non-religious medical institutions that would accomidate the your convictions. It probably safe to say, that if a school claims religious affiliations that the curriculum is going to included those religous convictions, e.g. a human being is made in the image of God, the body functions uniformily because it was designed etc. It never hurts to call and ask to what extent they incorporate their religous beliefs.

You'll find the Jesuit schools are all much less focused on religion than Loma Linda is. I think you'd feel perfectly comfortable at any of them. The Jesuits are one of the most progressive orders of priests.

I had a friend who applied to Loma Linda this past year, because his brother went to dental school there. His brother said that you are required to attend their religious services every Sunday, believer or not. If you don't go, it's grounds to not let you pass, or something like that. Pretty heavy stuff to me if you are not a Christian, or at least a very religious one. Don't know much about other religion-based schools. Just beware of their policies, I guess.

In all the time I spent in a Catholic hospital or Catholic institutions did they force religion on anyone.

Will you find it difficult to to treat a patient who is Christian? What if he or she asks you everyday about your faith? What if they have crucifixes all over the room? What if you go to a school whose is strongly connected with Christian or religous based hospitals?

I think your just making to big a deal of it. I bet after treating many patients in a couple of years you will realize that faith is a way to heal.

Good Luck, in finding a medical field that isn't tied to Religion.

doc adam,

i have no problem with religion, and i'm non-judgmental for those who are religious. i just would rather attend a school that does not have excessive religious overtones and i don't think that's a problem. i do agree with you that faith goes a long way to heal, and i actually wrote a 30 page paper on the role of religion/faith on healing. so please man, don't judge me on my preference to not be "forced" to go to church.

peace...

Sorry about that

You really took the long way in saying that.

AK•••••Looks like you were just looking to flame him for his post on not wanting to attend a school where religion is crammed down your throat and is all over the goddamn syllabi. Ease up and keep your religious "feelings" to yourself.
