I am a freshman 4yr USN HPSP student and a little confused about what to do...

My school does not have breaks so I won't be able to attend ODS until I graduate. I know we are entitled to 45 days of Active Duty training, but I don't know how to use this for my first year. I would eventually like to do a clerkship, but as a lowly D1 I probably won't have that opportunity until later years. So I'm not sure how to use my ADT time for this fiscal year...any suggestions?

On another note, I saw the specialty/residency acceptance list on NKO, so I was wondering if anyone knows if they didn't offer spots for Oral Path? Just interested in it and didn't see it on the paper. Thanks!

I am planning to do a 3 week externship over the summer at one of the Army bases. Although I can't do much yet as a D1 (technically I'll be a D2 at that point), it should be a great way to get some experience in a military clinic.

I personally would just do school orders for four years.

And it's way too early for you to worry about specialty training. The numbers per specialty vary each year and there is no way to predict what will be available when you reach your junior year. This year's list for training commencing in 2013 hasn't even been released yet.

If I understand correctly, you have to have a break from school for at least 45 days to do a clerkship and you have to have attended ODS first... I could be wrong on that though. I only had one period where I didn't take school orders because my school had a 45+ day break between my D3 and D4 years. I went to ODS during that time and I am very glad I did, it was one less thing to worry about after graduation. Graduating, taking state licensure exams, moving, etc. are stressful enough without having to go to ODS. Just my two cents.

Could one go to ODS before dental school? I mean if school is going to start in late Aug/early Sept, then why not go to ODS in June/July?
