How stringent are medical schools about grades earned after being accepted

I hate to be that guy since I'm sure many of you are still worried about getting interviews, but does anyone know of anyone that had their acceptance rescinded due to poor grades?

I got kind of concerned because I just got my first exam back in a chemical engineering course called separations and it was a high D (37, lowest exam grade ever, class average 43). I'm probably realistically looking at a C in that course now and probably B's in the rest of my courses this semester (17 hours, biochem 2 is easiest plus 10 hours part time work). Would this look pretty bad or do you think that the school I got accepted into, Medical College of Georgia, would realize the difficulty of my course load?

From what I hear of friends who have been accepted, getting nothing but Bs-Cs will be fine but medical schools don't want to see any Ds or Fs. I'm sure this is school-dependent though, did they give you this information with your acceptance packet? I'd be willing to bet that info is there.

...in the event your academic performance should show significant deterioration on further course work which you may have yet to report and/or complete, your acceptance will be subject to review and possible cancellation... .

Not very specific. I guess I'll just hope that a mostly A student turning into a B student with a C isn't significant deterioration. I have to imagine that it would be D's or F's that they are talking about.

Call and ask. They can't repeal your acceptance for asking 😛

Why would they care? Who would know?

The ONLY reason I can think of is if they keep record of total UG gpa at time of matriculation, rather than application. They might, who knows?

More importantly, who cares? The standards are usually VERY low, and even if you did fail a few classes (but still got your degree), they are not actually going to resign your acceptance. That beings said, just pass your classes. You're smart, shouldn't be too tough.

in light of your acceptance, you should have received a package in the mail. if not, you should be receiving one soon. they will probably include some sort of expectations (if any).

Yes, you can get your acceptance rescinded if you slack off too much and got bad grades. It probably is school specific but I do know it happens. Why I know of some kid who got into my med school and got rescinded cause his grades after the acceptance tanked. How bad? No one knows but apparently bad enough the school was like "hell nah we don't want you no mo'"

just don't fail any classes and you'll be fine!

There is at least one applicant who had at least 2 offers recinded in the last cycle. 😱

From what I recall there were no Fs.... but the gpa for that last term might have been between 1.00 and 2.33; I really didn't pay much attention.

I don't know which schools recinded the application last cycle. I saw the application this cycle.

The school will know because in the end you must send your final transcript to the school whose offer of admission you accept.

Every time this comes up I think of this applicant you mentioned and shiver. What a nightmare.

You will be required to provide a final transcript to wherever you matriculate, so yes, they will know how you do during the remainder of the year. Most schools accept you conditionally. The condition is that you complete the remainder of your coursework in a satisfactory manner (as determined by that med school). Many places specify in the acceptance letter that this means a "C or better". So a C- or below puts your acceptance in jeopardy. Other places are more vague regarding the expected grades needed, but are likely to get concerned if you slip below the C range. Technically they don't have to "rescind" your acceptance -- you were accepted with the condition that you would continue to get a C or better in everything remaining, so if you get below a C, you no longer even have an acceptance -- you did not meet the condition. The med school has the option to take you anyway, or move on to the next person on their waitlist. It's pretty silly to let it get to this. You presumably got A's and B's to get into med school in the first place, so just keep things going close to this mark and you won't fall to far. An acceptance isn't going to justify laziness in anyone's eyes. And you didn't apply to med school because you didn't like to work hard anyway -- if you did you are in for a bad surprise.

If you call them and find out that they can rescind your acceptance, quit your job and focus on passing the class. Is a part time job for a pittance an hour really worth throwing away your chances at becoming a doctor? Use extra student loans, room with a friend and eat tuna fish and ramen if you have to, but don't let something like that screw up your future.

You can also consider withdrawing from some of the classes that are eating more of your time if they aren't required for graduation - though you should call admissions and see how they will view a W...

My job is actually a nice respite from doing schoolwork. I'll just probably have to do a little more studying on Saturdays.

And all my classes are required unless I want to take 19 to 21 hours my last semester.

Does your medical school allow you to postpone acceptance?

I guess what it boils down to is that you should call them and explain to them that you are in a difficult situation, but you won't give up your acceptance for anything, so what in the world would they advise you to do?

Then do that.

I think I overreacted. I don't think straight B's and 1 C would be that bad, because one of my other semesters I got straight B's and 1 A when I took a similar course load.

I just kind of freaked out when I got a 37 on a test.

An SDNer who had an acceptance rescinded last year posted the experience. Hopefully, others will benefit:
Hi everyone.
I was accepted to IUSM this year, with a 3.6 cGPA and a 35P MCAT.
I had only 70 hrs of volunteer services, 40 hrs of shadowing, and no research experience.

However, my senior year was a disaster, and my grades declined rapidly. My cGPA dropped to a 3.42 and my only offer was withdrawn by the institution.

my current plan is to take another degree, and hopefully, bring my cgpa back to 3.5x. meanwhile, I will try to find some research opportunities and more volunteer services.

what do you think my chances are in securing a spot in med school for the class of 2016?
