how the hell did XXXX get in?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That thoffen guy -- total loser.

Myself.

I've slacked throughout undergrad, half-assed any volunteering work or part-time job I've had, and pretty much relied on social skills to create a network of connections with professors that landed me research positions (which I slacked at) and good LORs.

If it were up to me, I'd just play video games all day and party all night long. Which is what I am doing now that I have been accepted. 🙂

funny... this thread has been open for an hour and a half, and nobody has even attempted to post an answer to OP. I don't think it will get ugly, just boring and repetitive.

Well, there's the self-deprecating ones at least.

Somebody mentioned this, but I would say: ME.

Although I was 100% honest about everything during the application process (none of this, "gee, golly I just want to serve the underserved and I will work for free, 20 hours a day....."), I still think that my current status casts a significant amount of doubt on the effectiveness of adcoms.

I am in a good medical school, but unlike everyone else here, I am DEFINITELY not sure that I want to be doing this. What I want in life is a continuous challenge and personal satisfaction. It is great that we get to help people, but there are MANY other ways to go about doing that......national intelligence, military, peace corps. The only reason I am even here was because it was once suggested to be that medicine would present a formidable intellectual challenge and I kind of put on blinders during undergrad pursuing this goal.

In my interviews I was asked: "why medicine?" and "if not medicine, than what?". For the first question I answered with what I said above. For the second, I said "join the CIA." I then explained further and mentioned how I still would get the satisfaction of helping people and the intellectual challenge of having to think on my feet (if I were in the clandestine service). The truth is that I wouldn't become a nurse because I am not keen on taking s#$% from people and I don't see the same intellectual challenge. I didn't say "oh, I would be a medical researcher" because the intellectual challenge there is not intense enough....things tend to move in slow motion or simply for the purpose of generating publications for the sake of generating publications (this is not ALL research, but it does constitute a notable portion).

So, despite my honesty, I was still admitted. Now that I am here I am constantly looking for other career options. I am still 70% sure that I am doing the right thing, but I think I was a risky choice for these adcoms. Perhaps my candor was really what they were intent on evaluating in the interviews.

This is not directed at any URM's nor is this meant to turn things ugly.

But I have a mexican-american friend that graduated with a 3.2 and 27 MCAT and landed 3 top 20's. Lets just say he totally loves and abuses the fact that people with certain ethnicities get hooked.

He even made the joke - "I dont deserve this but luckily my last is ______"
He still jokes about it to this day.

In terms of people not DESERVING it...All the people that are going med for the money. They still exist and California is full of them.

I like this. It reminds me of "I'm not racist or anything but... wanna hear a funny joke?"

But, I will concede that your friend sounds like a bit of a dork for throwing his acceptances in people's faces. What's he hoping to accomplish?

I don't know everyone in my class all that well, but I'd honestly say that my class is remarkably normal. Thats what I like about it. I would have to say that I really think med schools do a good job of picking there matriculants. Its possible that there are individuals with great stats that don't get in, but I'm guessing theres almost always a reason someone isn't accepted - as much as it hurts to admit it, they don't just look at your name and say, "eh, I don't like that name, I don't want them in the class of 2012." And on the other hand, everyone who was accepted was chosen for a reason. Its always possible that an applicant was misleading, but I think the adcomm has enough experience in choosing good applicants that they can see through the fake individuals.

Yes, there may be one person in each class that shouldn't be there, and there are probably many more deserving candidates that get passed over, but I think the system we already have is likely a good one.

I got a friend who got into med school with a 2.9 GPA (low-tier undergrad), no MCAT, and pre-reqs taken at a barely accredited program (for chiropractors) 😱 Now, it isn't in the US, but a very good medical school to say the least. He never once volunteered, did research or any EC except film... and now he is finishing his first year of medical school. No joke!

Also, I got another "friend" who literally had the DAT exam for his year and got into a top dental school with his 2 friends (who he split the test with) and just lied about every EC/volunteer he ever did. Also, he had every exam throughout undergrad and had a high gpa (which is actually quite common in my school 🙁). He is now finishing off his last year of dental school... fortunately 1 out of the 3 friends got kicked out of the school for cheating and suspicion of lying on app/DAT answers etc.

I actually know someone who gave me a number to a black market for old exams (my school does not change any questions so its pretty much the same test). They charged way too much, so I never bought any from him... but the women who gave me the number showed me the stuff she got from him. Really BS for those who don't mind paying money or cheating. Out of my whole college career I had only 3-4 classes with old exams... I don't know any other individual in my school who had this little or took a class only b/c a friend had or is taking a class with the tests.

I got another friend who is a history major and just pays a professional to write every essay he every had. He graduated with a 4.0 and now knows nothing about history. He even admits to me that he hates the major.

I got a friend who cheated throughout undergrad and then had his brother take his LSAT and got into a top law school, but declined it b/c he knew he would fail. He is now going to a lower tier school and cheating off his brother.

The world is corrupt and evil, but that does not mean you have to be. I try to keep as far away from these ppl as possible and try to do what I feel is right. I worked my a** off and in the end, I will know that I will deserve it. I guess the only difference b/w me and them in the future will be, I won't doubt my ability to perform when the time comes. I should have really made up a fake account name, b/c at least 10 of my friends know this name and ppl will be angry... but i dun care.

Side note: The system is f ucked up! This does not mean you should exploit it, but definitely remember that it is not perfect and you shouldn't get f ucked by it. I think for the past 2 quarters I haven't showed up to class one time other than on test day. I literally just pay my tuition so I can take a test and have a diploma to say im education -- which is BS.

I think Good Will Hunting said it best when he said, "You wasted $150,000 on an education you coulda got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library."

Just my 2 cent.

Personally, I try not to judge other people like that. It is not up to me to say who deserves it and who doesn't.

Once you get to med school, you'll find a few people who clearly managed to successfully bluff their way through the interviews. The process isn't perfect.

How the hell did XXXX get in?

I searched the forums and could not find a user named 'XXXX', I think you need to get your facts straight.

I agree - this system can bring good, hardworking people to their knees. All you have to do is falsify a chart once and you've committed a felony - I think that few slip through the cracks throughout the entire process.

How do you cheat on the DAT, and how did you get your brother to take the LSAT?

I know. He is constantly posting things like this, (alluding to URMs). Sometimes I wonder, what is the point really? It's best to ignore it. Like I said, whoever thinks that they should be the one who decides who deserves a spot, and who doesn't, is severely misguided. You never know what someone had to go through to get to where they want to be so stop being so judgmental...

Paul van Dyk - Anthem lyrics in your sig? Nice 😀

they're in for a rude awakening when they find out that the money doesn't exist.

Can't be worse than what post-docs make.

marginal candidates get in if they have:

low MCAT (28-31), high GPA, good extracurriculars (EMT, OEC-T), impressive interview
high MCAT, low GPA (3.2-3.5), good extracurriculars, impressive interview
ultra-high MCAT (38+), high GPA, poor extracurriculars (basically volunteering lackadasically, or just shadowing a doctor here and there), OK interview

...etc .. with med school, no one thing can get you in, but anything can keep you out
