I was thinking, if a question arises (say on politics or policy) that for SOME reason warrants me to bring up my belief on religion, would being an agnostic be frowned upon today?
If you can talk about it somewhat intelligibly, why would it be frowned upon? Chances are though, your religion will not come up unless you bring it up yourself.I was thinking, if a question arises (say on politics or policy) that for SOME reason warrants me to bring up my belief on religion, would being an agnostic be frowned upon today?
Loma Linda and Liberty might care, but other med schools, including those founded by the Jesuits, are open to diversity in religious views or lack thereof.I was thinking, if a question arises (say on politics or policy) that for SOME reason warrants me to bring up my belief on religion, would being an agnostic be frowned upon today?
Some Christian some scientists: Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Issac NewtonThe population of atheists in medical school is much higher than the general population.

I'm an extremely secular person, but if you brought it up in your app, or in the interview, I could have a lot of intellectual full batting you around, like a cat with a mouse.
What do you mean? Like you'd give them a hard time and have them back up their beliefs intellectually?
Exactly. Like throw out the watchmaker and the watch analogy.
I always loved how people say that.
"Well, if there wasn't a creator how come [insert any biological discovery here] is possible? We must have been created by someone, that is GOD!"
Yeah, because it fooled me as a teenager. How RNA strands made protein copies or how cells have organs and they have complex purposes. 10th grade in Biology. Oh man, I wasn't in my right mind at all.

This topic is now beyond my capability in knowledge. So, the multiverse is spontaneous?
This topic is now beyond my capability in knowledge.
*explodes*
What?
The multiverse is just the theory of either an infinite or finite number of universes which contain everything. It's "advanced", but the premise is relatively simple.
To simply somewhat, is the universe spontaneous?

Who knows? So, the multiverse is spontaneous?
Could I steer the topic away from cat and mouse antics and direct the subject to something like: "Aren't you more curious how my beliefs/values are going to affect the care I give my patients?"
No matter what you believe in or don't believe in; I think that's a more productive use of the interview. If the interviewer wants to spend our hour trying to prove my beliefs are wrong (through analogies or arguments), I'd report him/her. That's not an interview.
A liberal muslim homosexual ACLU lawyer professor and abortion doctor was teaching a class on Karl Marx, known atheist
”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Marx and accept that he was the most highly-evolved being the world has ever known, even greater than Jesus Christ!”
At this moment, a brave, patriotic, pro-life Navy SEAL champion who had served 1500 tours of duty and understood the necessity of war and fully supported all military decision made by the United States stood up and held up a rock.
”How old is this rock, pinhead?”
The arrogant professor smirked quite Jewishly and smugly replied “4.6 billion years, you stupid Christian”
”Wrong. It’s been 5,000 years since God created it. If it was 4.6 billion years old and evolution, as you say, is real… then it should be an animal now”
The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of Origin of the Species. He stormed out of the room crying those liberal crocodile tears. The same tears liberals cry for the “poor” (who today live in such luxury that most own refrigerators) when they jealously try to claw justly earned wealth from the deserving job creators. There is no doubt that at this point our professor, DeShawn Washington, wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than a sophist liberal professor. He wished so much that he had a gun to shoot himself from embarrassment, but he himself had petitioned against them!
The students applauded and all registered Republican that day and accepted Jesus as their lord and savior. An eagle named “Small Government” flew into the room and perched atop the American Flag and shed a tear on the chalk. The pledge of allegiance was read several times, and God himself showed up and enacted a flat tax rate across the country.
The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He died of the gay plague AIDS and was tossed into the lake of fire for all eternity.
Maybe that was too lowbrow for you.

Not to sparkle any religious debate here, but I was purely gullible back then.I'm a Christian, and I do believe God created us. However, I also believe the universe has evolved over millions of years (not created thousands of years ago), and believe in science obviously. It's very possible to be religious and believe in "creation"- as in God created original life, and also believe in "evolution". I respect individuals that are not religious, or are of another religion, and I would hope that in medical school people would do the same.

Yeah.. one of assistance-pastor at my church taught me not to believe in Evolution at all. This soon followed-up with his pseudo-science. Like watchman analogy. Not to mention, how he taught us that Evolution Theory is devil's trick to fool you.
He went to one of top 3 schools in nation. So I believed in his credential somehow. Not sure if he actually went there, because I wouldn't just go up to him and ask to verify.
Of course, like you said, we have to differentiate between Bible scripture and Science. I stopped going to church since 2013. I was christian my whole life. Even went to Christian kindergarten-elementary school for 5 years when I was young.
There's a difference between the Christianity your pastor believed, and what a lot of science field involved Christians believe imo. I wish more people understood that creation and evolution are compatible, and that a lot of Christians shouldn't feel forced to pick one over the other. Obviously not trying to get into a religious debate either haha, just wanted to point out that it is possible to be a science based Christian. And the majority of Christians are not the LUCOM fanatical people haha I think it's important to have a variety of different faiths and view points in med school, because I feel that I open my mind up more and think more critically when exposed to different opinions.
All protected categories (unless you bring them up).On a serious note, what subjects are off limits when it comes to the interviewee's personal life?
Sure is. I have known or learned from quite a few scientists who are devout (Christian and Jewish) and see no conflict there. The most common explanation is that science is just exploring how God does things.
On a serious note, what subjects are off limits when it comes to the interviewee's personal life?
Some things we're not allowed to ask:
What does your spouse have to say about your going to med school?
How will you take care of your kids?
Anything related to religious beliefs (the Jehovah's Witnesses and blood transfusions in an emergency are fair game; ditto medical treatments vs prayer)
Anything sexual or harassing
Anything that would violate HIPAA or FERPA, especially in a group setting
I would qualify this a bit: adcoms cannot bring up these issues for discussion. However, if these issues are brought up by the candidate in either application or interview, then they are implying permission to discuss them. Hence anything you bring up in an application, you should be comfortable enough to discuss.

A marxist post-structuralist continental Ecole Normale Supérieure professor and feminist activist was teaching a class on Martin Heidegger, known hermeneuticist.
”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Nietzsche and accept that his genealogical method was the most highly-evolved theory the continent has ever known, even greater than Hegel's dialectics!”
At this moment, a brave, rational, positivist analytic philosopher who had read more than 15000 pages of Popper and Wittgenstein and understood the raison d'être of empiricism and fully supported all modern hard sciences stood up and held up the constitution.
”How universal is this text, frenchfag?"
The arrogant professor smirked quite Jewishly and smugly replied “It's not universal at all, ****ing positivist, its 'truth' is rooted in our shared understandings about culture, the subject and the nexus of power and knowledge”
”Wrong. It’s been 225 years since human reason created it. If it was not universal, and post-modern relativism, as you say, is real… then it should be regarded as a myth now”
The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of On Grammatology. He stormed out of the room crying those ironic post-modern crocodile tears. There is no doubt that at this point our professor, Michel Foucault, wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than an AIDS ridden sadomasochist interested in fisting. He wished so much that he had some kind of truth to hold on to, but he himself had written to disprove it!
The students applauded and all rolled into American universities that day and accepted Wittgenstein as the end of philosophy. An eagle named “Formal logic” flew into the room and perched atop the copy of "Principa Mathematica" and shed a tear on the hardcover. The last sentence of "Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus" was read several times, and Karl Popper himself showed up and demonstrated how dialectics is nothing but a means of justifying contradictions.
The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He died of the gay plague AIDS and his "books" were disregarded for all eternity.
A liberal economist, stock-market trader, professor and Goldman Sachs board member was teaching a class on Milton Friedman, known bourgeois ideologist.
”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Friedman and accept that he was the most highly-evolved political philosopher the world has ever known, even greater than Karl Marx!”
At this moment, a brave, internationalist, proletarian manual worker who had taken part in 1500 revolutions and understood the necessity of class war and fully supported all decision made by the working-class-in-movement stood up and held up a coat.
”What is the value of this coat, pinhead?”
The arrogant professor smirked quite bourgeouisly and smugly replied “That is determined by its marginal utility, you stupid communist”
”Wrong. It’s taken 5,000 hours of labour to produce this coat. If its price is determined by marginal utility, as you say… then the price determines its marginal utility!”
The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of Atlas Shrugged. He stormed out of the room crying those bourgeois crocodile tears. The same tears reactionaries cry for the “job creators” (who today live in such luxury that most piss money up the wall) when they jealously try to exploit justly produced wealth from the deserving proletariat. There is no doubt that at this point our professor wished he could transcend the ideological limitations of his material circumstances and become more than a sophist liberal professor. He wished so much that he could live in a society where each was cared for according to their need, but he himself had prevented its realisation!
The students applauded and all attained class-consciousness that day and accepted socialism as humanity's savior. A red star named “Historical Materialism” shed a tear from heaven onto the chalk. The Internationale was sung several times, and Lenin himself showed up and seized the means of production across the capitalist world.
The professor lost his exploited wealth and was arrested the next day. He died by firing squad and was tossed into dusbin of history for all eternity.

p.s. the weapon of criticism cannot replace criticism by weapons
If these do come up without you bringing them up during an interview, should you inform the school or what?
