So, my freshman year of college, I struggled a bit. I know, a lot of people do and this is totally normal. I failed a course for the sole reason that I just stopped attending. The follow year, I got my act together and proceeded to get straight As, save for a B in the course I had failed, and then retook. Overall cGPA is 3.85, sGPA is 3.93, and I never failed or got a D in another course

My question is, how do I go about tactfully explaining this F in secondaries? I don't know how to explain it...I just stopped going because I wasn't motivated and was distracted by my newfound freedom. I just don't know how to phrase this.

Just be honest and put what you wrote here. Like you said, it was a freshman course and you had a brief lapse in judgement. Obviously you had no major issues after that.
