The deal: My dad is paying undergrad tuition for my state school. I pay all other expenses (gas, car insur., rent, etc.) I am barely scraping by and just don't have the time/energy to put in more hours at work. How the heck am I going to afford APPLYING? I plan on taking out loans once/if I get in, of course, but can I take out loans just to apply? I am not even taking a kaplan course because it is just too much money.

How did you afford it? How many schools did you apply at and how much did it cost?

Dude has anyone ever told you about stafford loans? Go to the official fafsa website.

No, actually, never heard of them. So the loan is given to you and not the school? + I'm worried I won't qualify because my parents do have enough money, but they will not cover the cost of applying (and I'm a dependent)

I understand the concern... I just spent probably $2000 on application prep/applications/travel. I had no idea how much just the application would break the bank. Now my school is wanting $2250 to reserve my spot. Med school is rough...

I used extra loan money. And I'm paying for everything on my own.

(ps - Myuu, Can I tell you how much I love that you have a link to Dr. Horrible in your signature?)

Well, see, we're all better off knowing that he has a PhD in horribleness.👍

I have (or rather don't have 🙁) a ton in stafford loans right now. Paying those off is going to be so much fun.

Regardless of your parent's income and your status as a dependent, you qualify for Stafford loans. The money goes to your school, and whatever is left over after your tuition and fees are covered goes to you. Some schools will even direct deposit it to your bank account.

Ask your dad/other family members for a loan and then pay them back?

Sell your organs (J/K), sell your plasma, sell semen or eggs, get paid for studies requiring human volunteers?

The spring that I graduated from the university, I took out a 5k subsidized loan for the sole purpose of applying to med schools.

good way to practice for "how-to-prepare-to-pay-for-MED SCHOOL"

What sort of loan do you mean? How has this worked out for you financially?

My knowledge of lending is limited to what I need to know to fill out FAFSA forms and get Staffords. More specificity would really help me out, if you could. Thanks.
