hi everyone,

any tips on applying for away rotations third year? i'll be an ms2 this upcoming academic year.

are there deadlines to applying for away rotations? how does it work?

any help would be appreciated 🙂

also...i should probably ask my dean's office this, but, can anyone please inform me of what rotations are mandatory during third year? does it vary by institution?

You should probably read your student handbook or school website. That said, the 6 core rotations at most schools are:

Medicine
Surgery
Psych
Peds
OB/GYN
Family Med

some schools have more than that but it's pretty much the basic ones most schools have.

It's not super common to do aways during 3rd year, but some schools have them, your school or med students in ms3-4 will be able to tell you.

There is no central application. Every school has its own application procedure. go to their website. There is almost always a link for "visiting students". It may be either in the admssions page or the registrars page.
The most common requirements would be vaccinations, good academic standing and your school's accredication status.

You should plan on applying for aways during March of your third year. Most schools require that you be in your final year of medical education, on top of having completed all the requirements. While there are often no published deadlines, it is a first come, first serve type of deal. So, for competitive specialties/hospitals, you want to apply as soon as they let you.

Some schools make you apply through AAMC (it's called VSAS http://www.aamc.org/programs/vsas/) while others want you to mail the application directly to them.

You still have a ton of time, not to forget Step1 and even determining which specialty you want to pursue, before even thinking about aways. One step at a time!

when does vsas open? It didn't seem to say on their site.

VSAS will email you sometime in February. I didn't end up using it as the places I applied to weren't participating institutions.

So you signed up for it during the winter of m3?

Interesting, we don't have a family med rotation 3rd year. I think we sort of have one 4th year but we can do it anywhere (including at home). I might be wrong about that, but I do know we don't have a FP rotation 3rd year. Are we the only ones?

Well ours isn't called "family medicine" it's called primary care, but it's fm none the less, maybe it's called something else.

Nope. Surgery, Medicine, Psych, Neuro, OB and Peds. 4th year we have a short "primary care" requirement which I think we can do anywhere and in any primary care specialty. We also have EM 4th year.

How long is medicine? It might be integrated with that. Ours is actually a pretty long rotation, 2 mo, which is nice bc it's chill and laid back and they give a lot of honors. It'll be a good time to catch up on my research.

Hmm I don't know but I don't think so. Both medicine and surgery are 12 weeks long, I believe. We just don't get many people into primary care so I'm not surprised that we don't do it until 4th year.

I didn't get any aways in third year - it was all core rotations. We did have one free block we were encouraged to fill with a selective (usually rural med which school found for us). There are lots of places that won't take third years for aways. Read the websites thoroughly. I found all my fourth year rotations on the web - looked for a hospital that had what I wanted and all apps were online somewhere.
