Hey guys

I am confused about the whole application process. So to get started with the application, if I want to enter dental school hopefully in fall of 08, do I apply now? and how? Do I open up an account from https://aadsas.adea.org/ right now and start filling out the application and then send it whenever I want to apply? Can someone tell me how this all works please?

Thanks.

next May the application for the 2008 entering class will open up on the website, probably looking something like https://aadsas.adea.org/aadsas2008/logon.html

you'll have a few weeks to fill it out then you'll be able to submit it in June of 2007. Submit it as EARLY as possible!

Since you can't start filling out the application until May, I would recommend getting a headstart on getting letters of recommendation, studying for the DAT, writing your personal statement, and figuring out what schools to apply to. Also, more experience/shadowing in a general dentist practice or specialty practices can only help. And be sure to do well in your classes!

you can make a login for this year just to see what you will need to do for next year. Like previous posters- start working on your personal statement and LORs- the earlier you can submit the better. You could also start to work on filling out what you are going to say for the other parts of the applications (volunteer experience, ECs etc) and just save that in a word document so you'll be ready to go in May.

DECEMBER
Go to http://www.adea.org/AADSAS/default.htm and get yourself a username. Take a look around and see what you're going to need to complete the application. This will include information on your high school, your biography, your family, your grades (transcripts), the hours and locations where you shadowed a dentist, any other volunteer hours, research experience, awards/scholarships, etc.

JANUARY
Consider who you would like to write your letters of recommendation. Begin to review chemistry, organic, biology, trigonometry, statistics, etc. and get some DAT study materials for the PAT and reading sections.

FEBRUARY
Continue to study for DAT

MARCH
Continue to study for DAT

APRIL
Early in April go to the people that you would like to write you a letter and ask them if they would be willing. Here are some tips to help them write you a good letter.

Start writing a personal statement. It can be up to 4500 characters, including spaces Use a program like Microsoft word that has the character count feature.

MAY
Early in April go back to the people that you would like to write you a letter and let them know that you will get them the letter of recommendation matching forms in the middle of the month. Without being too pushy, let them know the importance of getting the letters in soon after you give them the matching forms

On May 10-12ish, go get an unofficial copy of your transcript. You will need this to copy your grades over to the AADSAS console.

On approx. May 16th, begin the AADSAS application. It will take a few hours to complete, if you don't have any questions or find that it asks something you do not have the answer for. (I remember it asking what rank i was in high school. I had to go to my HS and find out because I didn't know. I believe they have since removed this question from the application)

Print the letter of recommendation matching forms. Give them to your letter writers ASAP. Consider mailing the letters directly to the school as wel as AADSAS.

Print the transcript matching form(s) and take to each university you attended. They must be official trascripts, so that means they will most likely need to be mailed directly from the university to the schools. The fee for this is usually not much, ten dollars or so. Consider giving the university express postage to mail the transcripts.

Once everything is complete on your application, PAY AND SUBMIT ...then wait.

You could take your DAT at this time, though it's probably better to have taken it before you apply through AADSAS.

JUNE
Don't wait much longer if you have not taken the DAT. You're not likely to get an interview without the scores being in for the schools to look over, and first interview invites are coming soon.

AUGUST
The first interviews begin, depending on the school.

DECEMBER
1st offers for admission go out. Don't worry if you don't get in on the first round. The schools will continue to interview students for a couple of months. Typically classes are filled by the end of March or April, however there are always cases where they have last minute seats to fill.

Great advice has been given. You can submit the whole app once you have entered everything in. No need to wait til June to submit.

Good Luck👍

someone should save oldschool's post and leave and make it a sticky

Wow thank you guys so much for the great tips and info. Also I am planning to take the DAT's around August-September. Is this fine?

September is a bit late. aadsas normally processes your info in about 6 weeks. Which means October or November for you, which is late. Earlier application means a much higher chance for interviews, increasing your chance of getting into a dental school significantly.

once all of your information is submitted you must now drop your pants, bend over, and take it with a smile from all of the schools while passing out 50 dollar bills.

It starts in the fall around aug. every year. No semester starts.

Best advice I ever received was to apply in May and take the DAT before June turned to July.

WOW! Your AWESOME! Thank you for taking the time and consideration in preparing the roadmap for 2008 cycle. It's great👍 This is very helpful for the ones that are applying for "2008" cycle. Like me 😀 Very nice roadmap. Many kudos to you!

I would actually suggest asking for letters of recommendation in February, not April. Some professors will get them done ASAP but others will not. Plus some like to know that they have some decent time frame. You can remind them every few weeks and they won't mind. A couple professors told me I should remind them periodically.

Come April the end of the school year is approaching and sometimes it's better to actually track them down in person to remind them, rather than shoot out an email.

If you have a pre-health committee at your school then your LORs typically are sent straight to them. Mine in particular wanted one letter by March/April and the rest in June. So yes you have time but better to start early.

i would start saving money the whole damn thing is expensive as hell

When do you start applying for FA/ personal loans? Started saving but, I do believe I will need a loan ... 😀

yea i don't know about other universities, but i know at pacific the professors like to know that you want them to write a LOR before you take their class so during the semester they can see how you are doing and get to know you a lil bit...im applying for the 08/09 school year and i've already asked two profs

You can fill out a FAFSA for the 2007-2008 academic year starting in January. You may want to wait until you have your federal taxes filed (if you had income in 2006).

The only thing I would add is to take the DAT the summer after your sophomore year--directly after taking Organic Chemistry. This way, the subject is fresh on your mind and General Chemistry is only one year away, not two.
