I'm likely going to attend SLU next year and I would love to do a rad onc rotation at WashU's Mallinckrodt institute during my 3rd or 4th year. How exactly do I go about this? Letter, phonecall, email?

You should worry about away rotations much closer to when you are a third year. Then your school will have a procedure for handling away rotations.

Hi there,
Most medical schools do not allow third year medical students to do elective rotation until they are done with required clerkships. You may want to consult your Dean of Education to find the policy on this.

The other thing that you have to is consult WashU to see if they allow visiting medical students to rotate. If so, then you need find out how these rotatations are arranged and make the proper arrangements. For example, visiting medical students at Mayo Clinic have to apply for their rotations in a similiar manner to residency application. Many places also have deadlines so you have to check these out and meet them.

In any event, wait until you are ready to begin third year and do your investigation. By that time, you may not even want to do an elective in radiation oncology as you may have other interests.

I'll actually be living in the Central West End which is right next to WashU. It'll be weird living in the shadow of one of the top med schools in the nation! =P

Trust me, you'll get used to it. Eventually you will even tune out the ambulances at 3 am.
