How to become an instate applicant?

Hey I'm kinda curious... Let's say you want to become an instate applicant to a school like UNC or any of the Texas schools? Would living in the state for at least 12 months suffice to you becoming an instate applicant?
 
Every state defines residency in their own way. Some states have very simple residency requirements, others have very stringent ones. You can find this information on government websites for individual states.
