how to become DMD and MD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
4 years dental, typically a 1 year externship, then 3 or 4 years in an OMS program/residency.

how do u become a DDS/DMD and MD???

is it just for oral and maxillofacial surgery? How many years does it take?

Not worth the effort, in my opinion. You won't be as happy in either field, i.e. dental or medical) an MD or a DMD/DDS will be.

Where is there a 3 year OMFS program? And even if you do a 4 year program, you won't be awarded an MD. You need to attend a 6 year program after dental school.

Wait, so that link that someone put for Case Western, is that the same thing as these guys are talking about? Or is that different? Will that enable you for OMFS? I don't get what that program does 😕 Can someone with a better understanding please help explain it to me? 😉

The case dental program is fairly new so I don't know much about it. As for the six year OMFS/MD option, I don't really understand the motive for going after the MD. Everyone on here has said it's only a status thing, but a dentist I talked to said he believed that the goal of that program was give someone an overall view of human health as it relates to oral health. The lines get fuzzy though (at least from my limited perspective) between OMFS/MD, OMFS proper, and ENT proper. I suppose that there is overlap though.

Personally, I can't imagine going to 4 years of a dental school and then 6 years of OMFS/MD simply to get a few extra letters after my name. If you're interested in letters, get a Ph.D. and go into academics where it matters.
