Hi everyone!

I'm a junior Biochemistry major at a LAC in South Carolina, but I grew up a KY resident. I plan on applying to either MD or MD-PhD programs in the states this next cycle with the ultimate goal of doing cancer research/being a practicing oncologist and I basically have no idea how to start looking for an differentiating among the schools. More specifically, what have you all found helpful in determining what schools fit best for you? What's a good way of determining whether or not you're competitive some place?

Buy the MSAR. You are competitive everywhere.

Follow-up question - do such a thing as "scholarships" to med school exist? If so, are they generally school-specific?

Yes and yes, but given your stats, you are in a good position to receive one.

you should enroll at harvard + stanford at the same time. get 2 medical degrees so your name can be Split Infinity, MD, MD, PhD, PhD.

...that is certainly an option, I suppose. I, too, must sleep on occasion, however...

+1 Furman is a no name school.

http://chemistry.furman.edu/students.php

"Furman Chemistry ranks 3rd in the nation among predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUIs) granting bachelor's degrees certified by the American Chemical Society, and 14th among all colleges and universities."

But yeah, little national name recognition, though the extent to which that is a relevant consideration is certainly up for debate.

And I'm decidedly caucasian...whatever that means.

I was also joking, because your app is ridiculously awesome if true. No one would care where you did undergrad in your case.

This is terrible advice. How do you expect OP to even do that? They're on opposite coasts! :slap:

OP, if you're going live up to your name, then you should try to double enroll at Harvard/Hopkins.

Yeah, because I totally have an impetus to make up things about myself so that people I will likely never see can tell me they think this person who doesn't actually exist has a good chance of getting into med school. You caught me 😉

And I figured you were being sarcastic, but Furman has been such an awesome place to do undergrad that I go to bat for it whenever I can.
