Several of my colleagues that are in internal medicine found jobs and signed contracts during their PGY-2 year. I was wondering what the proecess is like looking for jobs in PM&R? When do most folks begin searching for jobs? As a fresh PGY-2 resident, I have no idea where or how to even begin looking for rehab jobs. I am not necessarily looking to sign a contract, just to begin looking to see what is out there. Mainly interested in inpatient rehab at this point. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

CareerMD and AAPM&R send out regular e-mail updates if you sign up for them--you can filter them out by location. I signed up to be notified of any jobs in/near my home state, as those were the only jobs I'd consider signing on to in my PGY-2 or 3 year. However, I haven't heard of any PM&R residents signing a contract prior to PGY-4 year unless they signed in a more rural area. It seems like the majority of my senior residents signed their contracts mid PGY-4 unless they knew where they wanted to end up (as early as late PGY-3) or wanted to wait and see more options (2nd half of PGY-4).

I'm also interested in inpatient rehab, so I also spoke with the few inpatient directors near where my family lives (it's a more rural area, so there are only 4 units or so within a couple hours drive) just to get to know them a bit and get an idea of whether they may be looking for additional help in the future and if they'd prefer someone with fellowship training or if it didn't matter to them. Some said they'd probably have space for me, others kept it more open-ended, none shut me down.

Your program coordinator is also likely to forward you any job openings recruiters send to him/her, and recruiters will likely contact you as well (usually more heavily towards the end of residency). I'm sure there are other job databases as well. Plus there's word of mouth. And don't forget USAjobs.gov if you're interested in the VA--sometimes those jobs get posted on the other jobs databases and end up in an e-mail to you, other times they don't.
