Okay, I haven't traveled by plane much and never with a suit. What would be the easiest way to bring a suit (without causing wrinkles) to interviews? I'd like to only bring carry-on with me if at all possible.

Find yourself a nice travel suit bag to carry it in. Usually the captains & flight attendants have closets to store their luggage and jackets as well as those of the first class passengers. I ask them if it is okay if I put my suit in there for the flight. Never had any problems.

You can buy something as little as a carry-on sized soft-sided suitcase with a bag built in (much like the one you keep your suits in your closet in) that rolls up with the suit in it. It sound like it would wrinkle everything up, but its usually not that bad. I did it for interviews

Yeah... any garment bag should do the trick, just make sure you hang it up as soon as you get to your hotel room.

Even if it does get wrinkled, you can hang it in the shower (after you take a nice hot one) and the steam will help tremendously. Just don't get it wet!

Use a garment bag. You are likely not going to be able to carry this on but you can "gate check" it. This means that you take it to the gate counter where you tag it and then leave it at the end of the jet way as you get on the plane and pick it up at the same place after you land. They have never lost anything that I have gate checked.

Regional jets don't have much room for hanging things and there is no first class on these planes. As a last resort, just about every hotel has a iron and ironing board in rooms. If not, get there in enough time to send your suit out for a quick press (doesn't take much time). You should not be scheduling yourself so tight that you can't get this done. Just ask the concierge when you arrive. I have been able to get this done even at Marriott Courtyards (low scale hotel).

You should be able to take it on the plane. I took a bridesmaid dress on the plane recently and just asked the flight attendant to hang it up for me. If they give you any crap, just say its a medical school interviews, that the rest of your life depends on a crisp suit, and cry. Crying always works.

I got a $3 bag from Men's Wearhouse when I bought my suit (actually, due to my hard-ball negotiating skills, I got them to throw in the bag FOR FREE. Take that, Men's Wearhouse). You just gently fold the thing in half and stick it in the overhead compartment. No wrinkles at all, no need to ask anyone to hang it up for you, no need to gate check it. Just make sure to hang it up when you get to your hotel, or wherever you're staying.

Wow dude, that's the most bad*** thing I've heard all week.

Folding it in half inside a plastic suit bag in your carry-on. Most suits contain a high percentage of synthetic fibers which do not wrinkle as easily as natural fibers such as cotton or linen. On my first interview, I carried the suit separately which was a hassle. After that I tried sticking it in my carry-on (so the baggage wouldn't be lost) and I never got any wrinkles.

They can be had for $99 at Men's Wearhouse.

Agreed! These things are awesome...two sizes/styles, and not having to check bags is priceless. I carry this and my laptop/paper bag right onto the plane. Packing list = 2 full suits (jacket/pants/shirt/tie), and enough casual clothes for 7 days without reusing anything. Pack it all right and this thing is a life saver.

You'll have to do a little more ironing as space inside is at a premium so most things will get a little crammed. I really can't recommend it if you have large feet (11+)...there won't be any room for your shoes, unless you only take the pair you have on.

How do you not check in bag when you have your shaving stuff in the bag?

Shaving stuff is fine as long as the cream is travel size. This year alone I have taken 19 flights and have never been bothered about my razor.

As for the suit, I just have a garmet bag that folds in half. I place it above me (but I wait to get on the plane so that other people won't crush it with their stuff).

yup. safety razors are A-ok. the only thing they might take is if the shaving cream is over 3oz. pain in the butt fricken rule.

Wait... so do we have a consensus agreement on a [cost]-effective way of transporting a suit on a plane? Sorry, don't mean to seem rigid, I am just really interested in identifying the best method. Thanks so much.

just get one of those suit bags, they are real cheap, like around $10, and stickit in your carry on luggage.

put it on the hanger under the suit jacket
