Forgive me if this has been answered, but my searches didn't answer my question...

My school gives out percentages and letter grades. Which scores does AADSAS use to calculate GPA? i've never been exposed to a 4.0 grading scale before; all I have right now is my overall average, and would like to know where I stand right now, as opposed to when AADSAS is done with calculating my GPA.

Anyone know what a 80-82% average is on a 4.0 scale? I'm still waiting to get a couple final grades back, but I know my final overall avg will be in that range.

really depends on the teacher/class/school. Hard to tell. You don't get assigned letter grades? Are you from Canada?

% grades (at big public institutions or in big classes) usually don't mean a lot since many grades end up being curved. Usually this means that the mean (average) grade is set to a certain grade (usually in the C+/B- range which would give you roughly a 2.5). The A- range is usually one standard deviation above the mean (which would give you at least a 3.7). So a general guideline would be: Mean + SD >= 3.7, Mean ~ 2.5, Mean - SD <= 1.7

Straight scale classes are a little iffier. Usually the A-/B+ border is a little lower than 90%. In my experience, profs of small classes like to give out more A's than profs of big classes and are more flexible and may scale to where a certain % of the class guaranteed gets an A, while the profs of big classes are more stringent about their scale and will generally let you know in advance (in the syllabus or something). But in HS 94% = 4.0, 90= 3.7, 87 = 3.3, 84 = 3.0, 80= 2.7, 77= 2.3, 74 = 2.0...

an 80-82% would place you in the B- range. So, I would guess that based on my schools/AADSAS gpa scale:

A+ (97-100) 4.33
A (93-96) 4.00
A- (90-93) 3.67

B+ (87-90) 3.33
B (83-86) 3.00
B- (80-83) 2.777


... follow the pattern. SO if you are around an 80-82% i'd guess that you were in the 2.7-3 gpa range... i realize that the way i've written it a 93 is both an A and an A-..generally, if i get a 92.5 or above its an A and below, is an A-.

totally depends on the school. at my school an 80-82 is a B- (2.7) just like the above poster said. however ive heard that at some canadian schools (UofT) an 80% is a A (4.0)

JEEESH this is kind of scary. All along I thought I had a pretty good shot at getting in....

amalgam: yes, Im from Canada. I go to UBC, and those students that finish with 80% or better on their top 27 credits in a school year make Dean's list. Both percentages and letter grades are on my transcript, hopefully the latter are taken into consideration.

Doh boy: at my school, 90+ is an A+, 85-89 is an A, 80-84 is an A-, 76-79 is a B+, and i THINK a B is 72-75. That being said, I've heard classmates say that an A- is around a 3.7, which is why I was pretty happy with my overall average.

Yeah I was gonna say that maybe that's the "uncurved" or non-normalized grade. If I ended up with an 80% in a difficult upper level science course then it would probably be a B+ or A- which is closer to a 3.5.

OK so i read that PDF and double checked that the %-letter grade conversions are on my transcript, which they are. Based off these two things, I thiiiink that when they calculate grades, i'll end up with ~3.7 cGPA, which is what I was originally expecting. *fingers crossed*
