How to compensate for this poor GPA?

Try and get it to above a 3.0? Either way you're going to need to do an SMP. The question is whether or not you'll even get into an SMP, and even then, is it enough? I have no idea.

Obviously, you'll need to do some post-bac work, which does not have to be through a formal program. Medical school education is already long. Another two years of post-bacc should NOT be a problem. If I was in your shoes, I would start thinking about doing post-bacc for two more years. While doing post-bacc, make sure you never get a B ever again.

Also absolutely Ace the MCAT. There is still love to be had in the mid 3's if your MCAT does some talking for you.

Right now I am halfway through my undergraduate degree and I have a 2.45. After dealing with mental problems, I am doing much better now and so are my grades. I think at best, I can graduate with something in the 2.6-2.8 range (even if I get straight A's). I know applying straight from UG is out of question, but do I still have a chance with doing an undergrad program/SMP/postbacc?
Tough situation but not entirely impossible. I would work as hard as you can in classes (do not accept a grade less than A) and would tack on a double major to extend the units to dilute the bad grades. 52/120 can be increased more with the double major. Second, if you feel your first two years are not representative of your potential, I would seek out information for having them retroactively withdrawn. Better to have those grades erased and lose the credit and redo it than to essentially be shut out of medical schools because of a low GPA. Good luck!

Also the trend is your friend.

The problem is, I'm finally getting my act together, so I don't know what to do about these past 2 years. I guess I have only taken 52/120 credits so far. Mathematically, I think I can only achieve a 2.9 in the next three years if I maintain an excellent average.
Dont do a SMP. Take 45-50ish credits with a DIY post bacc at your school. I was told this by admissions officers and it's done wonders for me. Save your money and dont do a SMP. Goodluck.

If my math is right, you should be able to break above 3.0 if you can maintain a 3.5 for your remaining 68 credits. Or 3.3ish if you can pull off 4.0. That all depends on you, though, and how much effort you're willing to put in. Its definitely possible.

Yeah, OPs low GPA might be math struggles... (2.45 + 4.0)/2 is def higher than 3.

I didn't do the math, I used a GPA calculator! But yes one of my C's was in math

What estimated GPA did you plug into it?
2.45x52=127.4
3.5x68=238
238+127.4=365.4

365.4/120=3.05

I made a mistake, my GPA is at 2.471 to be exact. Not sure if that changes anything. Apologies, have been running on little sleep for midterms.

I'm not

Doesn't really make a difference. Barely a hundredth of a point. 3.04 with a 3.5 average.

Maintain a 4.0 and you will be in better shape.
