Hi everyone, I feel like this is a common question so sorry about that but I just wanted to ask anyway just to make sure. So I've volunteered in 2 different hospitals for a few hundred hours each and I've done both shadowing specific doctors and clinical volunteering at each hospital. Right now I just have each hospital as a separate experience and called them all clinical volunteering but said in the description I did shadowing too. I feel like it makes more sense to group stuff together this way because each was an individual experience. But do you think I should have a separate shadowing activity where I combine all the shadowing in case they specifically look for that? Or is how I have it already ok?

Thanks!

I suggest at least some of the shadowing hours be split out and entered into a Shadowing space (at least 40-50). You might estimate these by thinking back to what % of the time you were only observing a physician. Don't double count the hours.

If you don't do this with all of them, be sure you add & Shadowing to the name of the space.

Shadowing is not considered a community service, BTW.

I would split them up by shadowing and volunteering, not by hospital. Even if it makes sense to you remember that adcoms will only see what you tell them so if I saw what you were describing I would be confused as to what you actually did. Better to be specific so they can see the full extent of what you did and understand your experiences. If I were an adcom I would like that instead of having to guess if you were trying to spin shadowing as clinical volunteering.

Hi so I split them up by shadowing and volunteering but now I'm confused about what to put for the organization name and contact if there's two separate experiences in the entry? @LizzyM @Catalystik @any1elsewhocanhelpapoorsoul

Or should I divide my two experiences into four experiences, 2 shadowing and 2 clinical volunteering so I can put the proper organization name and contacts for each? The descriptions would be kindof short though and idk if it'd look like I was trying to space out my activities

I probably wouldn't do this for the reason you gave. I'd keep the shadowing and volunteering separate since adcoms look for both and you wouldn't want them to miss either.

I'm not 100% sure about how you should list the two organizations under both entries, but @Catalystik is the best person to ask on sdn imo.

If you have two clinical volunteer spaces and one for shadowing, how many hours would you have in Total Hours for each?

When grouping experiences into one space, the location and contact for one goes in the header (either most recent or most substantive), and any others would be added to the narrative when describing related material. Subtotaled hours and datespan are also in the box. Total Hours in the header adds the subtotals together. Header datespan can include all the experiences in the box if they aren't too far apart.

There are other ways to do it if this doesn't work for you. I can link to a Shadowing example if you need it.

Right now I combined volunteering into one space and shadowing into another. I selected the repeated option and put the hours in separately for each hospital because they were over different summers and I put the names of each hospital in the description. But do you think I should divide up volunteering into two so the organization name makes more sense? Volunteering would be 50 at one and 300 at another. And then shadowing would be 100 in total.

I was also considering putting the organization as "Hospital 1 / Hospital 2" and then putting the contact for one hospital in one entry and the other in the other. Does this sound ok?

If you could link to an example to help that'd be awesome. Sorry if my description doesn't make sense I'm kindof confused.

0) When you use the Repeated feature, it implies that what's in the header is true for everything in the space. You'd use it, say, if you returned to the same hospital two summers in a row.

1) You have enough hours at each location for you to use two Clinical Volunteering spaces. That way the two locations would be correct in the headers.

2) The way you suggest sounds confusing, and not strictly true.

3) See item #10 for the example of listing shadowing at multiple locations: *~*~*~*Official AMCAS Work/Activities Tips Thread 2017-2018*~*~*~*

In your situation, since you have multiple shadowed docs at the second location, you might say in the second half of the shadowing narrative, "Other physicians (or specialties) shadowed for XX hours (included above) in Summer 2015 at Convenience Hospital in Otumah, AK, with Contact: yyyyy at 555-55-5555 (if the contact is true for all of them):

-Doc 1 name, hours, specialty, special comments
-Doc 2 ditto
-Doc 3, etc.

Ok, I'll divide up the volunteering and list the people I shadowed. Thanks so much for your help!
