Are you still at university? If so, go around to different science professors and ask them about their search and if you'd be able to participate.

Talk to any TA's you may have met through labs, ask them about their research groups and see if you can join, OR just go up to a faculty member you like and ask them about their research. Usually they are more than happy to mentor students, plus they get free physical labor.
