I've checked out RotatingRoom.com and have kind of struck out. I'm really hesitant to use Craig's list. Any other suggestions? I'm running out of time, as I'm trying to do rotations in July to August.

What cities are you looking?

Craigslist is usually a waste of time... either scam/spam or you write and nobody answers. I've had most of my luck with asking friends-of-friends or posting on facebook "anyone know someone offering a temporary sublet in X city" ... also airbnb.com , but you might need to be willing to put up big $ or live in an awkward shared space during your rotation.

Have you asked the coordinator for the department where you'll be rotating? Often they have a list of housing options--either residents with rooms to rent, or apartments where previous rotators have lived.

I'm a student at Columbia and will be doing a rotation abroad for the month of August. The apartment is about 12 mins walking distance to Weill Cornell Medical College and Hospital for Special Surgery and about 15 minutes away from Mount Sinai. Lenox Hill Hospital is probably around 10-15 minutes walking distance, too. I take a crosstown bus and a train to Columbia University Medical Center, and takes about 45 mins each way.

I am looking for a trustworthy individual to sublet my studio apartment. The place can maybe accommodate a couple. I don’t know how big the apartment is in square feet, but when I moved in, the broker gave me an estimate of around 300 square feet (could be smaller or bigger, but I thought I’d just give you a rough estimate).

DATES ARE SOMEWHAT FLEXIBLE. I will be away from August 5th through September 2nd but can vacate my apartment several days before August 5th until a few days after September 2nd if necessary; I have family in the area whom I can stay with until you leave.

My apartment has an AIR CONDITIONER and INTERNET connection.

LOCATION - My apartment is located around East 82nd Street and 1st Avenue. It’s a 3rd floor walk-up. It is a very safe neighborhood and is close to grocery stores, laundromats, restaurants, bus stops, and about a 10-15 minute walk to the 4,5,6 trains (East 77th Street or East 86th Street Subway Stops). There is no security guard in the building, but there really is no need for one.

I don’t actually have a bed; I sleep on a futon. You are welcome to sleep on the futon, my air mattress, or you can bring a sleeping bag or mat for the floor. Think of it as camping in NYC. I guess I live like a backpacker in my own apartment, but it works for me. I just figured that getting a queen-sized bed would cut into the space too much and I wouldn’t really have much room left for my trampoline.

I am not Martha Stewart. I’m not girlie and my place isn’t the most color-coordinated place. Just an FYI if you’re expecting Hello Kitty or the Ritz Carlton. Because it ain’t. I’m attaching a picture that was taken sometime last year just to give you an idea of the space. There is more furniture now and I have already thrown out the papasan chair .

Farmer’s Market . There is a farmer’s market every Saturday morning.

$1350 in cash including water and electricity. I’m thinking of a $200 deposit, and if you use the air conditioner a lot (and the electric bill is exorbitantly high), or there is something broken, I will take it out of the deposit. But I don’t have a lot of fancy stuff that can get broken.

About Me:
• Non-smoker
• Allergic to Dogs and Cats (and the building doesn’t allow them either)
• I’ll be leaving the country in August to work in a clinic abroad.

About You:
• Non-smoker
• You do not have any pets that will be with you during the month of August
• You are not a klepto
• You are a responsible individual who will not torch my place or somehow get me evicted while I’m gone

Am I asking too much?

Feel free to shoot me an e-mail at zpa2000_AT_columbia.edu with any questions or to tell me a little bit more about yourself and what you’re looking for. Due to my schedule, I may not get back to all e-mails, but will respond within 3-4 days after I receive your message if I think you might be a good fit.

Thanks so much for reading this far!

sublet.com is useful depending on the city/area....

I remember reading on here that you can use PadMapper to find out the safety/crime of certain neighborhoods before renting. I'm having some trouble though. Does anybody know how to use this feature? Thanks

airbnb.com really worked for me ... found a cheap nice sublet, so I would check it out, you may find something nice in the midst of the overpriced shared rooms lol
