one of my old partners got fired for rolling the ambulance at high speed going to a call....fortunately he was working an overtime shift without me....it was probably more of a problem that he hit 2 cars when he did this.....and they were full of people...without seatbelts.....needless to say, a mess.

I knew someone that got fired for 124mph in a 55mph zone on a country road. He was in a chase car responding to a cardiac arrest. The highway patrollman that arrested him (after completion of the call) told me that he didn't even know what passed him. He was sitting beside the road when a blur went past and his car shook from the wind created.

Of course, EMS would certainly be more interesting of you were high...not that recommend anyone trying it.

Was he responding with lights and sirens? I would have had a big problem with this, while yes it is againist the law to drive that fast while responding I would have his shift commander and mine out there, he crossed the line..

Yes, he had his lights and sirens on. The fact is, he was a seasoned medic and should have known better. The cardiac arrest was in a rural place, with BLS on the scene, and a survival probability of near Zero. Trying to be expeditious is one thing, trying to kill a family in a preventable accident is another. In my many years as a medic, I suppose I have gotten over 90mph a few times, often behind law enforcement. But, these were large highways with few if any cars, not curvy country roads. It simply isn't worth the risk, to myself or others.

The medic lost his license and his job. He was a great guy, but when you screw up, you screw up.
