Ok.. My downfall is reading about the arts.. be it literature or fine arts, my mind just glazes over when I start reading. Then I have to reread the same sentence over and over eating up valuable time.

Other than saving these passages till last to do, how else can I overcome this problem? I've had this problem as long as I can remember (ie: it would take me hours to read a chapter of shakespeare in high school).

What can I do? Just force myself to read more humanities articles??

Eat your favorite kind of ice cream while you read it. If you pair something you enjoy a lot with the reading, you will either stop enjoying the ice cream or begin to enjoy the material. 😉 It is a win win situation.

The association probably won't work. Here are some ideas to try.

A) Set small goals for yourself. For instance, say, "on Monday I will read to page 43, and on Thursday I will have read to page 80". Or break it up even further, "on Saturday I'll read to 20, Monday to 40, Wednesday to 60, and Friday to 80". Never try to sit down and read it all at once.

In addition to setting small goals, try setting up something with a friend or perhaps your significant other. For instance, ask them to go out with you on the weekend for some fun only if you have completed your goal. This will require some honesty on your part.

B) You could even do this in addition to the above, but write on several pieces of paper your goal, and distribute these to people whom you have regular contact with. Friends, family, coworkers, your SO, whatever. This usually works pretty well.

C) In contrast to A, if you regularly go out with a friend or girl/boy friend, ask them to not go out with you if you did not complete your goal.

I can't think of anymore, but I"ll post some more if I do.

The problem isn't doing the reading. I have no problem with sitting myself down until I finish it. (Which is how I got through most of my schooling :-D)

The problem is forcing my mind not to glaze over when i read something I am not interested in. I can have intense concentration during tests and stuff.. i just find it difficult to find that same concentration with everyday studying.

For example, usually with science, it is a similar way. I am more interested in particular parts of science (ie: physics) so I can get through the reading (since its more of a conceptual understanding), i can easily segment the reading into blocks.

Although I do find that my mind is usually less distracted first thing in the morning. I think I am going to try to force myself to do a VR passage every morning before classes. Hopefully that helps. Ill save the more 'fun' topics for later in the day. :-D

But if anyone has faced this problem or has ideas of how to resolve it.. holla.
