I was wondering which schools have you guys have had success "grouping" interviews in previous years. I read elsewhere on SDN that some NY schools grant interviews if you're in the area for another interview. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Cornell specifically says to call if you are going to be in NY for another interview

Do you remember where they say this? can't find it on their website. thanks.

Edit: Nevermind, I see it on the secondary confirmation email.

I scheduled Mayo and Northwestern for back-to-back days. It wasn't nearly as convenient as interviewing at multiple NYC schools consecutively, but since I live in the southeast, it was much more convenient to fly to the midwest just once.

I just got a Rochester invite. Seems like really far away (5-6 hr drive) from other NY schools. Is it worth it to group interviews? Do people ever fly one from part of NY to another?

no, flying from city to city in NY is complicated. There's a different dialect in each city and you have to go thru a five day quarantine and have a valid passport to fly from one to another. Also, you need a note from your parents.

yay for trolls 🙂

you can fly from city to city in new york state. i personally think its a little cumbersome and poor use of money, but i understand if you don't have a car and are coming from very far away. i don't know the nearest airport to rochester, but i'm sure you can do some googling and see if it works for you. in my opinion, however, it is not completely unheard of.

Looks like a Rochester airport to Ithaca airport is possible, but seems like a crunch to catch an interview the next day. might need to add in an extra day in between interview days whether by plane or by car.

rochester has its own airport. from JFK in NYC u can take jetblue up there. I dont know why you would wanna be goin to ithaca, Weill Cornell is in the city.

Why would you fly into Ithaca? There is no medical school in Ithaca. Cornell undergrad is there, but the med school is on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Am I missing something?

just theoretically looking at what happens if one gets Rochester/Cornell invites. grouping any NY school with Rochester is difficult. Columbia/Cornell would make more sense.

i didn't realize they're different campuses. thanks for clarifying the geography. Still that's pretty far from Rochester

You can group Rochester with Upstate, Buffalo, or Albany, but it makes way more sense to rent a car and drive the 2-4 hours than fly.

so i finally got an interview that might allow grouping - Mount Sinai. I'm planning on emailing Cornell because they ask you to let them know if you're in NYC. Does anyone have any experience contacting Columbia about grouping interviews? Do they prefer email or phone? Thanks!

Does Cornell prefer email or phone for grouping interviews?

i have a uchicago interview but no NW interview yet. Do you think it would be okay to call them and explain this situation and ask them if I could get an interview around that time? I tried email, but that got a generic response (your app is under review). what do you guys think? are schools receptive to asking for these accomadations?

Mt. Sinai set me up for a January interview. That's 4 months away!! I guess there's no rush for me to ask schools to group interviews. I could just wait and see if I hear anything from Columbia/Cornell/NYU and ask them to push the interview to January if possible. But I think I'll email Cornell anyway, since they suggested that we do. 😀

oct 19, U mich---> train to NYC, Oct 22 MSSM, Oct 23 NYU---> train to Rochester, U Rochester Oct 25th-->train back to boston

this was the toned down version of my grouping, the original was something like this:

NWU 9th---> train to DC, Georgetown 12th--->stay over, train to NC, Wakeforest 16th--->train to U mich--->MSSM, NYU, U rochester.

I ended rescheduling wake forest, the stay over was too long.

Would it be ridiculous to call Oregon (OHSU) and tell them that I'm going to be on the West Coast the week of October 16th since I'm coming all the way from St. Louis. I have interviews at Reno on the 12th and USC on the 16th so it would be a lot easier to get to Portland from there.

If I book my flight/hotel using Travelocity or some other online travel agent, I run into the problem of adding hotel days to my trip and changing my flight in the event that I am offered an interview in the say city. How do you guys do it? Do you try to group interviews and then book flights/rooms, or do you book one first while waiting for another school to grant you an interview? Suggestions please!! Thanks.
