Hi all!

I recently got accepted to an AmeriCorps position starting in September that I think isn't CRUCIAL to me having a competitive app, but that I would still love schools to know about. I really think it adds a new dimension to my app and is something that's new and exciting for me too. However, I won't be able to include it in the primary.

I was originally planning to include it in the "What are you doing for your gap year" secondaries and update letters, but not all schools take updates and not all schools have that secondary. What other strategies do I have to be able to include this experience? Could I include it in honors/recognition? (I'm personally very humbled but I don't think it counts as an award) Should I ask my committee to mention it as a blurb at the end of their letter? Should I just accept that some schools won't know about it until the interview?

Thanks!

Do you have another nonclinical volunteering role on your app that takes up 1 of the 15 spots? Maybe if its something related you could tag it along at the end of the description and put the experience title as nonclinical volunteering in general

Like say you did volunteering 30hrs at 3 different places, list all of them in the same slot and add AmeriCorps at the end saying start date etc.

Thanks so much for the helpful replies, everybody! What do you think about listing it under Employment? I've lumped together other odd jobs from college and think I could include this as a future "job" with one sentence summarizing my tasks.

Do you know what your role will be at the upcoming service site?

In general terms, yes. It would be just a one sentence broad summary (e.g. "providing health outreach and education") and I would of course provide more details once the interviews/secondaries roll in.

Is it possible to include this at the end of a clinical experience space (paid or community service, as Americorps is considered to be both)?

Thanks so much for the help, by the way! It would be hard for me to do so, just because the new position isn't so much a direct continuation of anything similar I've done. It's more so a new area of interest that also combines two of my previous experiences, but it isn't directly related enough to tack on.

I just realized that my committee asked me for a blurb of what I will do next year, so they will likely include this experience on the committee letter. If so, should I just not include it on the AMCAS activities? It would feel too forced and I think a combination of the committee letter, secondaries, and update letters should cover it for all schools.

You could tell a letter writer about it for sure. What I did was hint at it as a continuation on my primary and then I'm talking about it in some fashion in all my secondary apps. Also, I plan on getting a letter from my supervisor to send out to schools after I've been there for a month.

At the very least, I would try to have it in a letter.

Edit: PM me if you want to talk specifics since we're in basically the exact same position and I already submitted and started on secondary apps.

Then it seems to me it might be a natural progression that would fit at the end of your Personal Statement, instead. Adding it your short-term collegiate employment would trivialize it, and it could be missed completely.

That would cover the territory, provided you can be sure its included in the committee letter.
