So I’m submitting an update with about 1000 hrs for my position as a lab manager. Besides my own lab projects, I also train and manage undergrad researchers in the lab, among other duties expected as a lab manager. Because I have a ton of research hours already and want to bring more attention to the teaching and leadership aspects of the job, can I list it as ‘research/leadership/teaching’? I just don’t want to seem disingenuous and off putting when ultimately this is just another form of a research experience.

if you already had tons of research, why not strengthen other parts of your app that would unambiguously be non-research related? The difference between 500 hours and 5000 hours of research on your app are negligible unless it produced major posters/publications/conferences.

Because I make way more money as a lab manager then the vast majority of clinical jobs available to pre meds. I’m not doing it because I think I need more hours to get into med school, I do it because I support myself independently and can’t afford to live, pay for med school apps, etc on a close to minimum wage job. I’m just wondering if it would be iffy to highlight the leadership/teaching aspects of the job rather than just the research side of it. One thing I’ve learned from this process is that everything is compartmentalized on the med school app depending on how you label something. Just trying my best to take my experiences the furthest they can go in the admissions process without seeming dishonest.

Is this a new job(lab manager) or is this the job you applied with? If it’s what you applied with, why are you updating? The schools would expect you to continue to accrue hours and I think what you are describing is realistically included(understood) in “lab manager” job description.

Sorry I wasn’t specific. I was promoted to this position over the summer so I didn’t have it on the main app. It’s what I’ve been doing since.
