So i know i basically have to wear a suit and look at least somewhat formal. My question is what about the hair. I basically have hippy hair that goes to my chin from the front and past my sholders on the back.

My pairents want me to have really short hair but i was wondering if there was some style i could use that could look formal while leaving my hair at a moderate length.

BTW my avatar is my LJ picture (meaning its a picture of me), somethat that almost nobody else does randomly .....

Dude, cut the hair. Once you get your acceptance, you can grow it out again. The one thing you don't want to be remembered for during med school interviews is how you looked-- not being conservative is not good. You have to remember that a lot of these interviewers are somewhat old school and don't really appreciate "messiness" Remember that hair grows back, rejections don't (sorry, this is a lame statement, but I couldn't think of anything better).

go to a hair stylist and ask that they make you look professional while leaving your hair as long as possible. That way, you'll have reached a compromise, no? 🙂

seriously, you don't want to look back and say, wow, what if it was my hair?

Option 1: Pull it all back into a ponytail. Wear a baseball cap. Tuck the ponytail up under the cap.

Option 2: Go with a straight-up mullet. Medschools are looking for a well rounded applicant and nothing says well rounded like the ol' Canadian Passport: business in the front, party in the back! 👍

Cut the mullet. 🙂

Take a trim man 😎 .

There's an odd chance your interviewer might have a mullet , but don't bet on it 😉

Grow out your hair even longer and dye it golden blonde. Wear a frock and speak with an accent like you're from middle earth.
Alternatively, You could wear a cape and bring a friend to hold a fan in front of you so you appear to be constantly in the wind. Use the most absurd gesturing you can come up with whenever you say something. And insist that the interviewers address you as "Zeus, the eternal harbinger of calamity"

Actually, if the school has a significant clinical component, they may frown on you growing it back again even after acceptance. (Patients tend to be very vocal to the administration about the hospital staff's appearance.) But yes, cut the hair and look professional. Find a way to express yourself in a less outwardly visible manner.

Test...ok, this is so weird, what is happening with my posts? When I am typing it all looks normal, but what shows up when I submit is something else...

Ok...testing...

ETS ok that was the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me on a computer.

Ok, so anyway, I was writing that I have long hair (shoulders in front, middle of back in back) and think I looked great in my suit with my hair back in a nice tight low pony tail. No complaints from my interviewers, in fact my interviews have gone amazingly.

They are not looking for clones, go and be you, be honest, and if you are a good candidate, they are not going to care about your hair one way or the other, so long as you are respectful and do something appropriate with it.

I don't agree with Indryd's advice. A professional school interview is not the place to express your individuality. Especially since there is a blank on the interviewer's sheet inquiring about applicant's "appearance". Most interviewers are not members of GenX. Everyone else is going to be clean cut and suited up -- don't stand out in an unflattering way.

I was/am clean cut, suited up, and my very well-maintained and shiny hair goes into a very professional ponytail for interviews. It's not about trying to "express your individuality", it's about going in as comfortably and confidently as you can. If cutting your hair will give you an edge in confidence, then by all means...but I know if I cut mine it would be like going in naked...I would feel totally self-conscious and vulnerable.

If you (and your hair) are very professionally dressed up, and if you are a solid, mature candidate, your hair length will not make a difference. Even though I look like a hippy, I don't act/speak/come off as one. I exude confidence, competence, maturity, and respect, and my long hair has never once been an issue in my almost 30 years. I have never been turned down for a job, ever, and I have never received a sigle word of negative feedback from any employer, interviewer, professor...anyone...about having long hair.

I thought it was elvish.

be yourself. i stood out in my interview group. i wore a bright purple shirt and silver tie. (there's a thread about this topic too, and a lot of people seemed to suggest the same "stay conservative" route.) in all honesty, i think standing out puts you in a good position, IFFFFF you can present yourself as an excellent candidate. you already have the advantage of being memorable to the interviewer. now if you can turn that memory into a pleasant interview in their eyes, then you've just set yourself apart from the rest in a positive way.

if you are uneasy and unconfident on that day, then that'll hurt you a lot more than having long hair.

This seems like very good advice to me.

Me too. God, I wish I hadn't taken four years of latin in high school... completely useless! Elvish would have been much better.
