My friend received a job offer in a MCOL city on east coast at an academic hospital. The position is for an inpatient pharmacist. She has BCPS and five years hospital experience. Her offer was $120,000 and two weeks vacation and typical health care.

She gets paid about $125,000 at her current place but her vacation is a whopping four weeks. Should she try to negotiate more pay or one more week of vacation?

Why is she trying to leave he current job? That is pretty good pay and vacation.

I tried this before. Negotiating vacation most of the time won’t work in my experience because it is set based on the numbers of years of service one provided to an institution.
May be negotiating pay could work depending on how desperate they are or if your friend could convince them she would bring value to justify pay increase.

I just recently negotiated a extra 3K salary increase from the original offer. (Multiple that with lifetime of earning)There is always rooms for improvements. It will make a huge difference year after year.

You have beaten all of your competitions, you are what the employer wants, so don’t sell yourself short. You have a job offer on hand, so you have nothing to lose to push for a better offer. Just make sure you provide a list of your demand, and justification for them. It is more than fair to say your are paid xxx currently and yyy PTO days.

Be polite, firm but also know when to back off. Usually HR will push you off, but if you push hard, HR will defer final decision to pharmacy director.

This is the time to pull out the business card that pharmacy director gave you after the interview saying “call me if you have questions” and connect directly. I did, and it worked well.

Remember, pharmacy directors are people too, and will listen to reasonable demands especially in your case. On the other hand, HR are more like robots who have to follow rules and charts.

My previous organization is known for HR to push the candidates around, and usually ended up having the director to get involved and seal the deal.

Good luck!

This. Vacation is usually a non-negotiable. Most people, myself included, suck at asking for more money. That said I did with my current job and got it. Convinced my husband to do it and he got a big increase. They aren't going to rescind the offer. Ask for a match plus extra for loss of vacation.
