Hello all!! Just wanted to ask you dental students what you guys did before starting d-school. I've taken a year off from school, and I was wondering what I should start studying or going over before starting school in the fall...It's been awhile since I've opened up a txtbook. Let me know. Thanks.

nothing at all...relax and have fun. Most schools will ease you into the workload so its not that bad. No need to study early on because the professors have info they emphasize etc and you studying generally is just a waste. Go have some fun.

take a vacation and enjoy it while it lasts so that you are refreshed for when school starts. that will be more beneficial than half a$$ed studying

I have put together a rigorous regimen of rexercises:

1. Place a pencil across backs of fingers. Lift pencil 5mm and relax. Do this 100 times.

2. Extend pointer fingers. Rotate in circles. First clockwise, then counterclockwise. Do this 50 times.

3. Play thumb wars with yourself. Do this for 2 hours.

4. Do 75 pushups on your fingertips.

5. Practice giving people the rapid fire 'thumbs up'. Give 200 people the 'thumbs up' per day.

Do all these exercises and you will be prepared better than any of your classmates come game day.

you forgot #6- Practice extractions on your own teeth..this way you can learn from your mistakes. Then you will be able to practice an implant on yourself in the future. If you can't practice what you preach then you will not be a good dentist.

I'm not a dental student yet but I plan on reading up on anatomy and biochemistry. Ive never had an anatomy class and I didn't exactly make an A in biochem this semester. I've heard that these are two of the more difficult/time-consuming courses in d-school so having a background in them might make life a little easier for me. I'm not real big on wasting my time so I'm going to read the text books, refrenced by the ADA, that the part 1 boards are writen from.

This doesn't mean that I'm gonna lock myself in a library though. I'm going to hang out with my friends every chance that I get and, at some point, take a trip to Florida where I will be fishing my a$$ off with my unstoppable shimano fighting pole. With it's 80lbs power pro and Tekota 600 (levelwind) reel no fish will escape me this year :meanie:

DrHobie's exercise regiment doesn't help at all. 👎 I am planning to sleep a lot. That's the best way to get ready for dental school. 👍 You'll have many sleepless nights ahead of you. oversleep, oversleep, oversleep. That's the key to success 🙂

I agree. You'll be in the fire soon enough, so enjoy yourself and the sunshine while you still can! 👍

Ahhh... most of you have the whole summer to relax, my orientation is only 7 weeks away! I am jelous.

and to answer the question: I need to figure out a way to make my brain functional at 8 am. My brain is programed to "first class is at 9:05 am" and therefore refuses to do any work before that time.

don't worry that won't change in dental school and you shouldn't try to change it..

i have to say after gross anatomy was over at vcu (it was the first 6 weeks) i don't think i attended more than 2% of the 8 am classes and no more than 5 % the 9 am. -- off course these courses were basic science courses and can be missed easily... don't miss dental related classes though they might be important..

Let me help you: dental school is easy but time consuming with lab work. Don't worry about it.

Ditto. I skipped even more classes than he did. Maybe it's just VCU though.

I graduated a semester early and worked as a chemist. It was pretty much a waste of my time. If I could do it all over again, I would have spent that time backpacking across Europe. 😍

Start drinking now. Developed properly, this skill will benefit you for years to come.

Six weeks for anatomy! Ugh, here at Penn the didactic portion is five months long and then we have dissection (it's a seperate course - head, thorax, and abdomen all included) for another two months afterwards....I'm so jealous.

drrhobie's regimen has been helping me get prepared for not only senior year of college, but also dental school! 😀

but really, i'm spending the summer sleeping, hanging out with friends and reading books for pleasure. i also intend on taking multiple trips to the beach and start d-school with a tan. 😀 they'll tell you everything you need to know in dental school. why sweat it now?
