How to repeat a class at a different University?

I have couple classes with fairly bad grades from about 10 years ago. I would like to repeat them. One was Intro to Computers and Programming. The original school no longer has the same class. They have changed its name. How do I choose the class at the second institution? I mean, I can tell which class I need to take but how can I ensure the institutions I apply will actually accept them as repeats and drop my first grade?

Thanks.

Not sure you realize this but you are posting in the pre MD forum, not the pre DO forum. Retakes only drop the previous grade at DO schools, not at MD schools.

Generally, for DO schools a class will replace a previous class if it is demonstrably similar to the previous course and taken for at least as many credits as the first course. If your first course was four credits, a three credit course will not replace it even if the course is essentially identical to the first course. The new one must be at least four to qualify for grade replacement. I will let someone more familiar with grade replacement fill in any gaps.

Don't let your peers discourage you from the MD route, that answer is not inclusive.

Allopathic schools understand that people change over the course of ten years, and if you show strong ability NOW, your application will not be thrown out like do much rubbish as the above seems to imply.

You're a non-trad, therefore you will be given some consideration, IF you do very well this go around, show a strong upward trend, reflect your maturity, and rock out the MCAT. If all else fails, consider a SMP.

You have a lot of work to do, but if you put your head down and sprint, MD after your name is totally possible.

Thank you for the information. I meant to post it under DO 😀 Staying up late kills attention to detail. 😴

Thank you for the encouragement. All my inorganic, organic chem, bio, anatomy, biochem classes are within the last 2 years. 🙂 Post Bacc GPA is ~ 3.9. sGPA for all my UG work will be ~ 3.5.

I will take it in March. I did not want to apply this year as I have to save more money before I get in. (I am married with 3 kids). Realistically, I think I can manage 12-13 PS, 9-10 verbal and 10-12 BS but we will see. I read through TBR P and C and 1/2 of Orgo and Bio. I will start studying in about a week or so.

Good luck, man, that score may make all the difference.

With that post bac GPA and assuming your overall GPA counts all attempts (meaning you haven't already taken advantage of grade replacement) you would likely be in good shape for MD schools if you can get a balanced 30+ MCAT. Even if your 3.5 is with grade replacement, several MD schools will consider post bac work more strongly than prior undergrad experience, so don't think you are limited to DO schools.

Either way, since your GPA is already in good shape for DO schools, I would not bother retaking a decade old computer course, or anything else that is not a hard science. You are in good shape already, no point in retaking a non relevant course to boost a GPA that is already in competitive range. If you want to take more classes, adding on sciences will probably help your chances more, for MD or DO, than retaking old courses.

Good luck on the MCAT!

Not sure where anything I stated implied the OP was only capable of getting into DO schools. He or she asked a specific question about grade replacement, so I addressed their specific question. How does that in any way discourage anyone from pursuing MD schools, let alone imply their application would be viewed as "rubbish"?

If that wasn't your intent, then I apologize. I may have read the usual SDN per-allo viciousness that I have come to expect from the majority of those here. Cheers!
