I was invited for a medical school interview in a particular state and I am currently out of that state. Thus, I would have to travel. I also applied for another medical school in that same state. What is the best way to contact the other school and ask them if they would like to interview me that same week? I have not heard anything from this other school but I am very interested in them as well. It has been over a month since I completed my application with them.

Thank you for all your advice.

Best,

Verónica

It's called an "in the area" letter. Send one.

Do I mention the name of the school that I have an interview at to be authentic? Or can I leave that information out and just be vague? Both schools are top of my list of top choice schools.

Thanks for all your help!

Just mention that you will be in the area for another interview and would appreciate it if the school would be able to accommodate you as to minimize travel and expenses if possible. Be very courteous and cognizant to the fact that they may not be able to accommodate your request.

Does it matter who I send it to? I met one of the admissions counselors at a recruitment fair and spoke with him at length. The school does not seem to have a general admissions e-mail. However there are different admissions staff, should I e-mail the Associate Dean for Admissions (who I do not know)? My MCAT score may be kinda low for this particular school, but my other stats should be fine.

Also, although the school is in another state it is not horribly far, as it is a 6-8 hour train ride. Also, I am from said state so my family lives there, but I currently work out of that state. So I would have to do more travelling and take more time off work.

Let me know if I should change/add/edit anything about my letter.

"Dear Mr. X,

I am very interested in X School of Medicine. I currently live in X but I will be in X on Month #st interviewing at another medical school. If the admissions committee is interested in interviewing me, I would like to schedule my interview around this time to minimize travel and expenses. However, if this is not possible, I would be happy to return to X at another time for the opportunity to interview at X School of Medicine, as is one of my top choices.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Me"

Isn't it obvious that I want to minimize travel and expenses? If so, I am wondering if I should include that bit of information.

Thank you for all your help!

It looks fine to me.

Do I just subject the e-mail as "In the area"? Also, who I send it to? I met one of the admissions counselors at a recruitment fair and spoke with him at great length. I think that subject would be fine. As far as who to e-mail, I think the admissions dean would be best.

Your letter looks good, and I would keep the part about avoiding travel expenses. I might say "If fortunate enough to be under consideration for an interview...." instead, just to emphasize that you do not expect special treatment. It may also be a good idea to check around the forums for the specific school to see how successful applicants have been in the past in hearing a response. Good luck!
