Sorry about the directness of my question, but it's one that's quite relevant to me at the moment.

I have this massive exam in 1 week which covers everything I've learnt in the first 2 years of med school, and our school gave us 2 weeks of 'study holiday', of which 1 week is left.

I've spent 12 hours/day at my desk for a few weeks now, and the problem I have is that I get this uncomfortable numbing sensation in my butt and my thighs.. I suspect I am compressing the sciatic nerve or something.

I've got a comfortable chair, you know - one of those office chairs that costs $100, and I get up and stretch every now and then, not to mention taking meal breaks etc.. But as soon as I sit down again, the pain comes back in 5 minutes.

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance

You know, I've been having back/neck/everything else problems for the past 4 or 5 weeks. What I've found useful (lately) is to get up every so often (every 40/50minutes of studying), and then laying down for 10 minutes (without falling asleep 😉 , not that I can nap that easily given how I OD with caffeine everyday). Also, time permitting, hot baths helped me as well.
I actually tried the laying down or walking every 50 minutes of studying yesterday and today, and I saw a good improvement. Capsaicin helps for my muscular problems as well (don't know if you have that problem too). Hope your rear stops hurting! 👍

Actually, youd be getting numb because you cut of blood supply to your leg via your Sciatic ARTERY!! 😉

Break up your studying right in the middle and do some exercise. That helps me. The one hour at a gym or running will save you two of thinking about how uncomfortable you are.

I hear you.

Exercise is essential... though I did none today... or yesterday...

also: walk and study. Seriously: I read something over and then walk around talking it out to myself. usually with the dog.

try sitting on a big swiss ball at your desk for a while

Buy an Aeron chair, the best 800 dollars you will ever spend.👍

At home I sit either on a papasan chair with a pillow behind my back (about 100 bucks at pier one) or on a swiss ball at my desk. I get up about every 45 minutes and stretch and go outside if its sunny (to remind myself that there is an outside, lol). So far I haven't had many aches and pains. I also do yoga in the morning which helps me stay flexible. It sounds as if you are losing circulation to your legs so getting up and stretching more often would probably help alot. And do something to make your study seating more cushy.

Be sure you are not wearing jeans that are tight. I noticed a huge discomfort differential between wearing spiffy jeans and something loose like sweat pants. Also, my $100 desk chair has pads that force the thighs closer together, which I found caused discomfort after many hours. I had to switch to a different chair with a wide, flat seat. I had tried an added cushion, but it didn't help.

hit the stairmaster...it makes your ass big. I keep my ass clenched all day.

In order of importance:
1) regular exercise/regular breaks (30mins exercise per day.. easy to do!)
2) sit somewhere comfortable (not at desk)... i.e. on couch, with feet up and pillow behind back (And perhaps behind head)
3) comfortable pants/shorts (i wear exercise shorts around the house)
4) stretch the gluteal region to loosen up muscles and increase blood flow reguarly
