Currently I am wanting to go into a competitive specialty (nsg), I'm feeling very discouraged now that I can't do any research in this large pocket of free time.

I tried setting something up 5 months ago with a nearby med school and had someone from the hospital helping me with getting it all set up so I'd be ready by summer. But then summer came and this person never mentioned an entire new application process for gaining EMR access (the research was going to be doing case reports with a nsg); getting EMR access seems to take another whole 2 months to complete and be approved. So my whole summer I seemingly can't do any research, which is making me feel like I have no chance at matching nsg unless I take a research year.. Just wondering if there's anything I can do 🙁
I go to a US MD school.

Well it’s not true, you could do research during M2 or M3 year as well. Get involved as much as you can and be proactive looking for projects to work on. Follow through with the app for the EMR, case reports don’t take too long to do and you can probably work on them during M2.

Shadow and build relationships in the nsurg department so when your clearances are done you can start research.
