I took organic 3 years ago and I am having a very difficult time studying for it. I have the Kaplan Blue book and destroyer. I have been trying to go through kaplan and write down reactions and learn them, then I do destroyer and I have no idea! Any advice?

Also, everyone says to know the roadmaps from destroyer. YIKES. Memorize everything in the diagram, but any additional info with it?

Thanks for your help!

I’m with you on this one. It has been 5 years for me, and I’m having to re-teach myself everything. Sorry, but I don’t have any advice for you, just sympathy. Still trying to figure things out for myself. I thought the same things when I looked at the roadmaps too.

yea organic is mostly memorizing. I would suggest to go through kaplan, then do destroyer & refer to mcmurry if you have it. Its a great book. Try to make like a list of reactions with your own easy examples that will help you. Also understand SN1, SN2, E1 & E2 reactions. Those are like the most important reactions in org.

hope that helps!

This is what I did...read the blue book to get the basics down. Next, tackle the destoryer. On my first try through, I got about 50-60% of the answers wrong. I made notecards about the questions I got wrong and went over them again and again. In my practice tests, I saw a remarkable improvement. Do NOT memorize...understand the chemistry behind each reaction and make sure you know the solutions to the destroyer problems. That's my strategy...I'm taking the test in 10 hours. I'll let you know if it worked!

the o-chem section really doesn't get too in depth. I just used Kaplan and the Destroyer, and I got a 25! Also, Topscore is right on with what's on the real thing. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help! Good luck studying.
