So I work as a full time clinical research assistant during my gap year, no acceptances this med cycle, and have told my PI about my interests in research and doing a masters in Sep 2020. I got on board with the team 3.5 months ago, with my PI implying that I will be continuing as a master's student in his team in September. However I've decided that I would not want to do the masters now, and want to apply for medical school and maybe do masters/PhD later (as I've heard its better to do during residency). I feel as if my PI would be disappointed if I told him, and probably would lay me off to find someone else that is planning on staying for masters. Probably won't get a ref letter from him either. Should I push through and start the masters (2 years masters), or risk it and apply for med this year and hope for the best? It's not like I would hate doing the masters, it's an interesting field+ publication potential+ free with $25k stipend, but it won't help me too much with my application (I just applied late last cycle that's all). If I should apply instead of masters how should I go about talking to my PI?

How will your application have improved since the previous cycle if you were to apply again this year? You will get better responses if you include the information from the WAMC template and include the list of schools that you previously applied to.

I don't think any of us will be able to tell you how to talk to somebody, but if you have had a good relationship with your PI thus far, then as long as you are honest, and let him know that you never meant to mislead him about doing a masters, then it should be fine.
