How To Thank A Referee?

A professor of mine just wrote me a letter for a scholarship. I am also planning on having this professor write me LORs for med school. Would it be unethical for me to give this prof a gift showing my gratitude, when I know that I'll be asking him for LORs again in the future? Also, should I mail him the thank-you card and gift or give it to him in person?
