Hey guys just had a quick question about a volunteering/shadowing experience I have. Its at the surgicenter and my main goal there is to help the staff with whatever they need so washing the OR floor, folding towels, etc. However, when the surgeon performs a surgery I am allowed to watch and am in the OR. Sometimes I am even allowed to go right next to him and he will explain to me what he is doing and why. Anyway, my question is how should I chart this. would this be considered clinical volunteering or shadowing? Could I just pick which one I am lacking in and put it as that?

Thanks guys

Are you with a doctor and a patient? If yes-->shadowing.

If no-->not shadowing.

thanks for your opinion. That’s the thing there are times when I am with patients and a surgeon and sometimes I am not. any other opinions?

Nope. That's the answer. When you're with both it's shadowing. When you're not, it's not.

Sounds like you're probably mostly doing volunteering with a small amount of shadowing mixed in. I would probably list it on the app as volunteering, then explain in the description that X% of your time was spent directly observing physicians.
