Are residency programs ranked somewhere? I have often heard people say that "hospital A" has great neurosurgery training, or "hospital B" is the best for derm. Are there quantitative rankings somewhere or is it all just word of mouth that you learn about in M3 and M4?

When you get to the stage in life where all this information should actually be relevant, the secrets will be revealed to you, young padua.

For neurosurgery go here:

For derm go here:

for overall hospital go here:

Take these rankings with a grain of salt, but pretty much all those programs named you'd get great training at.

It's mostly word of mouth. US News has rankings for a few specialties, and even for those I'm not sure how they came up with them. The best thing you can do is talk to your advisor when you figure out what you want to be when you grow up and he/she will inform you of who's great, who's good, and who's not as good.

I'm also interested in how to evaluate match lists. When I go on interviews, the schools always put their match lists in the information folders they give us. I have no idea how to tell a great match list from a not so great one...

There's no fixed way. You don't know if people even applied for the specialty they would have liked to or if they applied for a less competitive specialty, or whether or not they wanted to stay near their school in an obscure state or if they wanted to head to the coasts.
