Hey Just wanted to know if anyone has any feedback regarding the city of detroit and particularly the area around UDM. Is this something that someone should seriously think about when considering UDM?

If you're a D student there, do you live around the school? How is the security? What about going out at night and things like that?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

im a student at UDM undergrad campus and am going to their dental school next year. i do however attend class at the dental campus once a week. (same as last semester). i usually see campus safety officer driving around the parking lot or sitting in a patrol car when i walk to my car after class. while i have never taken advantage of the opportunity you can ask an officer to walk you back to your car when you leave. (know of friends at the dental school who have done this). Im pretty sure you can find police reports on the UDM site. bottom line is its not the safest area and i wouldnt be surprised if something bad happened in the past, but if youre smart about it you should run into any problems.

the positive side of an impoverished area is that a lot of people come to the clinic with a need for treatment. having done shadowing at the clinic i know that youll see a lot of special cases and get a lot of clinical experience. rather than reading about something in a textbook you will likely be able to see it first hand. i think ill be more practice ready when i graduate going here vs a research influenced school.

the campus is pretty safe... I don't go there (yet), but they are 30 minutes away from me.... the campus is steel-fence protected all around , its like a castle. Its got security guards driving around campus all day (in their little cute Smart cars haha).

Now the neighborhood around, thats a different story. The few dental students i've spoken with said they mostly either live at home or live in the dearborn area (about 20 minutes away). Dearborn is pretty safe, amazing food

neighborhood is not the best and is a bit scary but if you have a car you should be ok. i think you pretty much need a car if you go to UDM since public transportation sucks in detroit. lol just pray that your car doesn't break down in the neighborhood. 😛

i heard most people live in a dif neighborhood. heard some canadians actually live in canada while attending udm.

i was actually a bit surprised by detroit when i interviewed there. i never seen such a decaying city.
the professors were very nice and i loved the school but the city was a big turn-off for me. if you don't mind the city too much, it's a good school to go to.

the school is great there is a large fence and your car should be fine....the area around it is different but just be smart and you will be fine

Thanks for all The input guys! So what about The city itself? Can you go out and do things at night? Are there ok areas? I'm hoping not to be confined to the dental school...!
