Hey guys,
So its study break time and here I am again😉

How much did u score initially when you first began UW?

Then, later on how did you fare while you were 50% done with UW?

UW makes me feel like there's a whole lot i dunno, so despite the learning I am doing from it,it makes me wonder how is it that I did well during school NBME shelf exams after not knowing SO much info😕 My step 1 confidence is taking a beating cuz of this cuz I go like 'what if the real thing turns out something same, something I haven't heard of is tested!:scared:

Is UW rote learning gonna assure you a good score?

Replies appreciated!

Yes uw can make you feel pretty dumb and doubt yourself, i've only done ~200 questions and i have already seen so much i didnt previously know or connections i never made. I have an ok average so far though, but i know for sure its going to go down as i do more questions.

The questions are designed to exploit your loop holes so see it as a learning device to fill voids in you knowledge.
One thing that's helping me with uw is that i completed rx before starting it so i've come across some of the concepts and questioning format and disguises, if uw was my first qbank it would have been brutal

Also i noticed that more than 90% of the uw questions can be directly answered with FA, so the more you go over FA the higher your scores will get

I agree, UW makes Rx look like its saintly child! I went over few qs from rx last night and bingo bingo bingo:laugh: but when it comes to UW ,i feel totally like a bozo bozo bozo😡 -a total klutz

I agree with yr point on FA, thats what I have been doing this week, memorizing FA, until my NBME next week on which I hope I can reinstate some confidence back.

When you learn FA, did you learn each organ and then do specific questions with UW /Rx or random mode as usual? How do you think one can optimize FA rote learning?

Thanks!

learn the topic and do questions on it to reinforce it into your head and make some connections or learn some points that u didn't while doing FA.

I do uw questions on the systems i have covered up to this point, once am done with all the systems then i will get into full random tutor mode

I'm hitting in the high 50's so far (over 10-ish tests), and I honestly think I murdered the pharm shelf, as I've mentioned elsewhere. Basically, as long as you're learning from the questions you miss, you'll be in good/great shape, regardless of what your percentage is.

When I really started hammering UW, I just got out of a round of cumulative finals for all of 2nd year so I was pretty well prepped starting into it. I started around the lower 70's and ended in the upper 70's.

Cool dude, you should've beaten d test! Good luck on yr result!

Hey I just started my studying for Step 1 today, and plan to go through all the UW before my classes end and I get a month off to devote studying. My scores are really bad right now, so much so that I'm not going to post them seeing the scores that everyone else has gotten. Anyway, I have done well in my classes this year (not honoring, but good for me) so I am not too worried. I feel like everything will work itself out over the next two months as long as I put in the time.

Don't worry, dude. I did a bunch of micro/immuno questions today and probably averaged in the high 40's on those. It's been my worst subject all year, so I'm not surprised. You'll have your ups and your downs, but as I said, it's learning from the questions that really matters.

Def don't get too caught up in what you get on a set of qbank questions. What's most important is what you take away from them and to NOT make the same mistakes again. I would worry if you're not improving but percentage in UW at the end of the day means absolutely squat.

hey vicinihil while we are on the topic, did more than 80% of the concepts tested on your exam covered one way or the other in uw?

This is an important point. Don't get flustered with your percentages in UW - it can really do a number on your morale.
UW - study tool
NBME - score assessment

While reviewing UW explanations for questions you got wrong - look at the percentage of people who answered correctly. Concentrate on the questions that a majority of people are getting correct and figure out where you went wrong.

For example, don't freak out if you missed a question that only 5% people answered correctly. But you should thoroughly review questions that 75% people answered correctly. I believe those questions are higher-yield because they represent easy basic principles that will probably end up on your exam one way or another.

Yea looking at the scores definately affects my emotions on a day to day basis I think... I've been doing my first pass of uworld all in a 15 day period up until 10 days before test day. In general my scores have slowly increased probably about 10-15% on average over the course of the first 2/3 i've done. Today I had a particularly rough day, some questions with too similar choices or stuff I should have known or did know and forgot or with low average percent people correct.

Clearly, rationalization is my defense mechanism of choice.
