How will courses moving online effect undergraduate students?

Hello,

As you may already know, most universities are moving to teach remotely due to the COVID-19 virus. I've heard rumors of the semester being "canceled"/receiving incompletes or exams being moved online, etc.

How does this affect us as applicants? What is the likelihood of the semester being canceled with only 6 weeks remaining?

I feel this is totally unfair to students who have been working hard all semester if all students get somewhat of an advantage from the situation.

Mental breakdown? You essentially have a 3 month break added to your summer break.

I actually think you should calm down. Everyone's situation is affected right now and it has taken a toll on us all differently. Students are indeed experiencing mental breakdowns in light of this all. School shut-downs are confusing to many.

And I think you need perspective. I'm not saying that you can't be concerned or be anxious with the changes but these things are implemented for a reason. And I'm not overreacting because this thing is already killing people and will kill more people before it's all said and done. And we need everyone to get to understand they're going to have to make sacrifices. If schools being cut to deal with a pandemic is somehow giving students mental breakdown probably means they need to develop better mental toughness/coping skills.

Indeed, other students are having breakdowns. Especially in that we're still expected to take finals next week. People are worried sick about making their parents/grandparents sick, some are struggling with all the changes going on around the school, the media has created a bit of a panic so some literally think they could die if they come into contact with this....so yes, naturally, some students are really having troubles at the moment.

Now, this isn't merely a change to online (schools aren't actually cut...) and a realization that many will be lonely. The virus has hit these schools, and with the way the media has treated this disease, people/students are indeed panicking about it.

It doesn't help that certain grocery items are cleared out everywhere. This has hit some people the wrong way - seeing the empty aisles makes people feel like they are doomed.

Let’s try to keep this professional. Perspective is good. It is a very real possibility that over a million people in this country could die from this over the next year. But the economic hardships and the inconveniences to life are no less real or important because of that, and it’s certainly not unreasonable to wonder what is going to happen with regard to med school applications.

I think the OP made the point rather clear. They wanted to know how it might cause Adcoms in the future to consider their grades this quarter. Personally, I was thinking that this quarter (my most difficult) might show medical schools that I could handle a heavy workload...so I came upon this thread and thought it pertained to me as well.

I said nothing about students worrying about their grades. Grades are the last thing on a lot of students' minds. As the OP mentioned, some professors are indeed handing out As. Others will still require a lot of effort and will watch students through webcams - thus finals for those classes aren't easy. Again, students are worried and stressed about the impact that coronavirus has had on their lives and many are struggling mentally for a variety of reasons. I brought this up because the tough love you've tried giving OP here is out of line imo.
