Hi all,

I'm reading a lot nowadays about how content might not be very important when it comes to the MCAT etc, so it got me worried a bit.

I'm going to start studying next week and I'm planning to take the MCAT in may. That gives me about 4 months to prep. How would you break down the 4 months?

The plan that I'm putting together right now gives me approximately 2 months for content review and 2 months for practice passages (AAMCS + TBR + TPRHSW + Kaplan).

What do you guys think? Do you think 2 months is enough to do FLs and take as many practice passages as possible?

I think 4 months is definitely enough time to prep. I think your two months for content review and 2 months for practice sounds good. You can always adjust it if needed (ex. 2-3 months for content with 1 month for practice tests). You may realize while doing practice tests that you don't know some material as well as you should, so you may go back and do more content review before doing more tests. Overall, I think splitting it up like you have it sounds good, but adjust if necessary depending on how things are going.

Also, to address your first sentence-- content is very important for the MCAT. The thing is that just knowing content usually won't be enough. The MCAT will test your knowledge of the content and your critical thinking skills. So definitely learn the content before you move on to the practice tests, then review content as necessary afterwards. Good luck!

Content review and practice passages go hand in hand. They should not be separated. How do you know if you know something without testing yourself? Practice passages provide that opportunity to consolidate what you learned, make sure you're being honest with yourself about what you know AND give you MCAT experience. That MCAT experience is pivotal as it's going to help you frame your studying (as in, you're studying for a test.. so you'll want to review the content in a way the test will expect of you rather than trying to conform later) and help you develop the critical thinking skills you need to be successful on the MCAT.

Review a chapter. Do practice passages on it.
After reviewing all the chapters, do some more practice passages.
About a month and change before your test, begin practice exams. Continue doing practice passages.

more of my thoughts on this/books

i'm taking it may 8, and my schedule is set up the same as yours (2 months content review, 2 months practice tests).
i agree with above, make sure you do some sort of practice questions ("drills/practice passages) along with content review and go back and review the topics you get wrong. good luck

You should start passages with content review. Do 1/3 of your passages while you review the content (this will reinforce the content in the context of the MCAT). 2 months is plenty of time to do FLs. Just do 2-3/week and you'll be a pro.

Thanks a lot everyone for your invaluable comments.. I really appreciate it.
